Position Overview
The School of Architecture & Design at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Architecture with an emphasis in Sustainability beginning in the fall of 2023. The Architecture Department faculty’s core purpose is to prepare new practitioners in the design of the built environment, and for the path to architectural licensure. It seeks ways by which humanity can inhabit this planet in a sustainably healthy way. It does so primarily through its NAAB accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program and its soon to be accredited Interior Architecture program.
The field of sustainable design has become increasingly central to architectural and design education as the effects of climate change, the conservation of limited resources, and the social and economic impacts of energy consumption in buildings become more severe. Architects are now expected to incorporate performance-driven knowledge and conduct research in this critical area of practice as a matter of course. For this reason, it is vital that the professional curricula and graduate programs reflect the most current research techniques and methods of application within the Department of Architecture. This position will be central to coursework not only at the postgraduate level but in the predesign, professional practice, integrated design and technology sequences. These are the primary knowledge areas in accreditation criteria of human and ecological performance, energy conservation, and economic dimensions of design. The faculty is committed to excellence in applying our knowledge and experience in educating the next generation of architects. In addition to the M.Arch. and IA degrees, the Architecture Department also offers an MA in Architecture, a PhD, and multiple certificate programs. It has summer, semester, and year-long foreign-study programs around the globe. In addition to Studio 804, our Health and Wellness Design Institute and the School’s Center for Design Research, the Architecture Department has recognized areas of expertise in Design-Build, Sports and Entertainment, Interior Architecture, Public Interest Design, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Smart Cities.

Job Duties:
Teaching (40%)
Typical teaching expectation for Architecture faculty is: two 6-credit architectural design studios, and one 3-credit lecture or seminar per year. Meet department expectation in terms of student advising.
Research (40%)
Conduct research, creative, and/or professional work that focusses on issues of sustainability. Disseminate this work through peer-reviewed publications and conferences. Seek external funding to support a focused research agenda.
Service (20%)
Serve the department, university, state, and the profession (primarily on committees and boards).
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications for both Assistant and Associate Professor Candidates:
- A professional degree in architecture.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in architectural practice plus a post-professional graduate degree in architecture, OR a PhD in architecture with an emphasis in sustainability.
- Demonstrated record of research, creative, and/or professional work that demonstrates expertise in sustainable design.
Required Qualifications for Associate Professor candidates only:
- Established record of teaching that is consistent with the department’s standards for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Architecture.
- Established record of research/creative/professional work that is consistent with the department’s standard for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Architecture.
