Salary– $4,117.00 – $6,419.00 Monthly

DUTIES

Our Coastal Recreational Crab Biologist,

  • Responsible for leading operations of the recreational monitoring program that produces accurate and timely coastwide harvest estimates of recreational of crab harvest.
  • Develops and reviews programmatic sampling goals, consistent with established statistical parameters, and supervises staff to ensure these goals are accomplished.
  • Develops and disseminates outreach to recreational harvesters, sport crab charters, industry and community groups interested in promoting coastal recreational crab opportunities.
  • Designs the coastal recreational crab monitoring program, including the design of data bases, harvest and effort estimation methods, and reporting formats.
  • Designs and oversees a data quality assessment (QA/QC) program, including establishing standards.
  • Develops and oversees routine data audits, and resolves issues independently or in consultation with agency research scientists or policy analysts.
  • Analyzes (using established statistical procedures) program data and reviews estimates of harvest and effort.
  • Regularly summarizes findings, provides regular data reports, and responds to specific data requests as needed.
  • Independently prepares written unit documents such as sampling manuals, prepares and annually publishes agency technical reports.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations.
  • Drafts rulemaking and policy documents, reviews agency regulatory pamphlets and or website to ensure accuracy of published information.
  • Assists with webpage content and updates.
  • Directs overall unit work plans, priorities, and assignments to ensure monitoring objectives can be achieved. This includes planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of direct reports.
  • Assesses training needs of staff and arranges for or provides instruction.
  • Routinely conducts team meetings to foster teamwork and facilitate communication.
  • Identifies, plans, and directs acquisition of equipment necessary to accomplish program objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Primarily office, but at times work will occur at boat ramps, dockside at marinas, on beaches, and aboard charter boats and agency vessels, in all types of weather and ocean conditions.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • 40-hour week Monday-Friday, unless otherwise scheduled.
    • Must be available to work on weekends, as needed.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel for field work, occasional meetings, and other assignments, not more than 25% of the year.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment, personal computer, agency vehicles (including 4-wheel drive trucks), boats (including outboard equipped boats), and various shellfish and fishery sampling/monitoring equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interacts with WDFW customers on a frequent and routine basis; occasionally encounters hostile interactions requiring an ability to remain calm, professional, and diplomatic.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

To be considered for the F&W Biologist 2 level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

And

  • One year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research.

Please note:

  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in an applicable science may substitute for one year of the required experience.

To be considered for the F&W Biologist 3 level:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

And

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research. Twelve semesters or eighteen-quarter hours of specific course work is required for certain positions.

Or

  • Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.

Please note:

  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in an applicable science may substitute for one year of the required experience.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

Training:

  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Data analysis skills including a working knowledge of ‘R’, Access database and high-level Excel spreadsheet and GIS software including design, maintenance.
  • Training and experience in statistical analysis.
  • Strong communication abilities both written and oral formats, including making public presentations and guiding large groups.
  • Ability to work on vessels in extremely rough open-ocean conditions and not be affected by motion sickness.
  • Ability to drive automobiles and 4×4 pickups on freeways and rural roads under all weather conditions, and during daylight and nighttime hours.
  • Ability to spend long periods of time using a computer keyboard while entering data.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
