Salary– $48,156.00 – $64,788.00 Annually

Responsibilities:
You will work with the Seed Orchard Manager to:

  • Plan and implement cone crop production activities such as flowering induction, weed management, insect and disease control
  • Establish new orchard blocks, including grafting, site preparation, planting, and post-planting tree care
  • Inspect and monitor cone crops for signs of damage or health issues and address any observed problems
  • Supervise other employees or contractors in carrying out work projects
  • Help develop new tools and techniques to improve efficiency
  • Ensure that orchard facilities and equipment are properly maintained

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of seed orchard cultural practices.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of irrigation,
  • Knowledge of uses and application techniques for fertilizers and chemicals including maintenance and operation.
  • Ability to recognize the presence and effects of damage, insects and disease on orchard trees.
  • Ability to follow a written work plan, and collect and compile data.
  • Ability to train and supervise work crews.
  • Ability to understand and develop the technical competence necessary to guide the growing and harvest of cones.
  • Knowledge of tractor operation and implement use, including safe practices and maintenance.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Required to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s license within one year of employment.
  • Required to live within a 20-mile driving distance of Meridian Seed Orchard to perform frost protection duties in an effective manner.
  • This is primarily a field position that requires extensive work outdoors in the seed orchard or remote orchards on difficult terrain under adverse weather conditions. Office work is required, including use of computers.
  • Work sites are located throughout the state, so overnight travel is often required.
  • Employees of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. This position is based in an office/fieldwork setting and requires in-person attendance/interactions with no option for full-time telework. Desired Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, horticulture or related natural resource field, and one year of professional experience.
  • Experience with trouble-shooting and minor repairs of tools and equipment.
  • Farming experience, including tractor operation, implement use and farm maintenance.
