Salary– $4,255 to $5,722 Monthly

The role of the Public Health Educator is to gain an extensive knowledge of public health issues and then translate that knowledge into highly effective education campaigns through a variety of mediums in order to educate the broadest group of people possible. The goal of the Public Health Educator is to help the public in the form of individuals and groups to take on new behaviors that will help them to restore, promote, and maintain optimal health. The Health educator provides groups, individuals and communities with experiences that promote learning based on sound theories in order to make available the information and requisite skills to make lifestyle decisions that promote health.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES(any one position may not include all for the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions in the class)

Conduct/organize and publish community health assessments, including the Community Health Assessment (CHA). Coordinate, update, and develop Community Health Improvement Plans. Interpret and analyze data; prepare various reports, work with media to promote programs; press releases and public service announcements to ensure dissemination of health education information. Track the status of identified county health indicators as well as trends in health, illness, injury and death at the state and local levels and the factors affecting these trends. Collect, analyze, and disseminate Mason County public health data in a timely manner that enables citizens to be informed of the health issues in the county. Work in conjunction with area community agencies and groups in the development of health education strategies to resolve problems and address priority issues in all aspects of various health environments including coordination of available resources, development of new community resources and programs, and referral of information requests to the respective service organizations. Maintain the department’s online presence through the use of department website and social media outlets. Assist with assessing and evaluating public health education needs by gathering data via community organizations targeted groups, surveys, workshops, etc.; present findings and recommendations to management. Design/develop health education activities for specific communities/groups by drawing upon available resources to design program materials and/or by developing materials to most effectively meet needs of targeted groups. Present public health programs to groups through talks, discussions, and consultations. Plan and direct conferences, meetings, and workshops to further health education; plan, conduct, or assist in conducting public health training courses and screening programs. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with area organizations, public agencies, health care organizations, schools, environmental agencies and organizations, tribes etc., in order to increase collective impact of community health strategies. Serve as consultant and as a resource to staff of the health department and assist them in planning and implementing educational components of their programs. Gather and organize books, journals, audio-visual, pamphlets, reports, and other health education information for resource purposes. Research evidence-based, best practice and innovative approaches to addressing priority health issues. Organize and participate in public health coalitions and task forces on various health priorities and health promotion topics. Write and submit grant applications. Assist the Public Health Department as needed in the event of a public health emergency.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS-Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health, research or closely related field. Master’s degree preferred. At least one (1) year experience in assessment, research, data collection and interpretation/analysis, program evaluation, and quality improvement. Public Health Educator I – Entry-level position within Public Health. Bachelor’s Degree required in Community Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, Public Health, Epidemiology or a closely related field. Public Health Educator II – Senior level position based on level of experience and the ability to work independently. Bachelor’s Degree required and has two or more years of public health experience in one or more programs. Public Health Educator III – Senior level position based on level of experience and the ability to work independently. Master’s Degree required and has three or more years of public health experience in one or more programs.
