GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Wildlife Coexistence Program Manager will oversee the Cougar Conservancy’s projects and grants in California as part of our mission to reduce human-wildlife conflict and conserve cougar populations through science-based management and conservation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with the Director in the development and implementation of programs focused on coexistence throughout California, and manages the day to day work and relationships with our conservation partners.
  • Collaborate with the National Park Service, California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW), National Wildlife Federation and #SaveLACougar partners, as required.
  • Identify new opportunities for fundraising and oversee grant logistics— track metrics, oversee evaluation efforts, write grant reports, create and present program updates to grantors as needed, and assist with fundraising campaigns.
  • Develop evergreen educational resources and media.
  • Deliver educational programs focused on coexistence specifically for local residents and provide to community members through events and trainings. Lead project management in the Los Angeles area, including our work with the #SaveLACougars campaign; Coexistence Services, the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing Docent Program, and P-22 Day & Urban Wildlife Week. Share events and programs online and create assets for promotion.
  • Assist communities living with cougars through our Conflict Hotline, email, phone, and Zoom, and develop canned responses to common inquiries.
  • Write press releases and respond to outlets in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinate with, oversee, and train Cougar Conservancy volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Review primary scientific articles and news articles related to relevant research
  • Strong oral and written communications skills required
  • Highly effective outlining, note-taking, project planning and implementation
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and direct face to face work with the public
  • Public speaking, outreach, and education
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Google Suite
  • Adobe Master Collection (Photoshop, Premiere Pro), iMovie
  • Excellent photography and videography, web and social media post design and implementation, and web page management
  • Effectively and safely operate equipment and tools including: laptop computers, digital cameras, trail cameras, and basic tools associated with fencing and enclosures
  • Field work, trail camera capture, outdoor skills, predator aversion and exclusion

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelors of Science in Wildlife, Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or other related field is required
  • Committed to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA) in all aspects of conservation work
  • Deep understanding of predator issues, including depredation, human-wildlife conflicts, and anthropogenic sources of mortality of cougars in California
  • Leadership and management experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with government and non-government agencies
  • Willing to travel domestically. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required.
