JOB PURPOSE:

To work closely with a variety of stakeholders to craft and execute a robust and nuanced stewardship strategy for the lead donors to the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. This position will report into the SDSS External Relations team with a dotted line reporting structure into the central Principal Gifts team in the Office of Development.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Responsible for strategic design and implementation of creative, consistent, and donor-centric acknowledgements, donor reporting, recognition, and events for a small number of donors who have made extraordinarily significant philanthropic investments in the SDSS.
  • Partner with SDSS faculty and academic leaders as well as staff to develop and implement bespoke reporting and recognition programs for these donors, ensuring that messaging aligns with the school communications plan and strategic priorities.
  • Serve as a strategic donor relations partner to senior leadership in the central Office of Development.
  • Working closely with finance staff and academic leaders, develop strategies to track, analyze, and communicate the impact of these gifts.
  • Plan and manage quarterly and annual meetings with the naming donors and their representatives in close consultation with internal stakeholders and primary relationship manager.
  • Ensure that gifts are awarded and utilized in accordance with donor expectations and university policies in a timely manner, consistently monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on fund distribution to internal partners. Resolve discrepancies and escalate issues when needed, including when distribution adjustments could be made to achieve stronger impact for donors.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Development Communications and Donor Relations to contribute foundational content for the school’s comprehensive stewardship reporting and development marketing needs and optimize content strategy.
  • Coordinate with internal partners, including other Donor Relations staff and development leadership, to plan and produce key donor relations deliverables, including written (hard copy, email, or web) content, video, and/or events.
  • Create and manage to project budgets and timelines.
  • May set priorities for additional colleagues or project teams as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Stanford internal candidates preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and articulate how donor relations supports and advances the broader fundraising agenda.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; proven ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner.
  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams.
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Must be able to find and interpret relevant information in Stanford’s financial and development information systems.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision making and in handling confidential and sensitive material.
