Position Summary

This position is responsible for coordinating with professional educators and community partners to develop and conduct environmental education focused on waste reduction and sustainability to Pierce County pre-k through 12th grade students and adults. Other responsibilities include developing instructional materials, promoting educational programs and giving public presentations to all age groups.

The work of the Pierce County environmental education team is guided by the Pierce County Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Plan and the newly adopted Sustainability 2030 Plan. Joining this dynamic team means being part of work group that is dedicated to reducing waste and helping build a more sustainable and livable Pierce County community.
 
Core Daily Responsibilities:
 
 Teaching
  • Conduct environmental education programs in-person and virtually
  • Provide direct instruction and facilitate educational opportunities at various locations such as classrooms, school grounds, libraries, parks and solid waste facilities, during the week and on occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Manage student’s physical, social and emotional safety using sound judgment and applying appropriate risk management decisions.
  • Provide assessments (formal and informal) of student learning to support evidence of achieving  educational goals.
Planning
  • Design customized educational programs that support the needs of the county, teachers, and community partners, aligned with our educational framework, program logistics and learner interests.
  • Cultivate an inclusive learning community, using sensitivity to bring cultural relevance to program content.
Curricula development
  • Create and modify lesson plans that support local and state curriculum standards.
  • Stay up to date on resources and methods to make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
  • Produce and maintain materials to be used for educational programs.
Skills Immediately Required:
 
 Knowledge of:
  • Educational pedagogy, learning theories and best practices
  • Basic project management processes
Skill in:
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) to audiences of various social, cultural, ethnic, educational and economic backgrounds
  • Effective classroom management
  • Working as part of a team and leading others
  • Effectively coordinating, performing and completing multiple duties and assignments concurrently and in a timely manner
  • Microsoft Office products and presentation technology
Ability to:
  • Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite or from home
  • Perform duties independently with minimal supervision; this is a hybrid position consisting of field work, office work, and working from home
  • Connect interdisciplinary subjects when teaching
  • Create and implement age-appropriate lesson plans
  • Research and gain subject matter expertise
  • Translate complex content and industry knowledge into an understandable form for customers
  • Successfully lead or collaborate with individuals and groups to plan and implement education lessons and projects
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist with staffing at community events, attend other events to inform the general public of waste and sustainability issues and techniques
  • Participate as a team member on Sustainable Resources division projects

Qualifications

Recruiting Requirements:  

A four-year degree in environmental science, education or related field, and two or more years of related teaching experience with some experience conducting presentations, workshops, and outdoor education in the environmental field is required. Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one, as travel is required of the position.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required background investigations.
