Salary– $3,987.00 – $5,229.00 Monthly

Our Chelan Wildlife Area Assistant Manager, 

Responsible for monitoring, enhancing, and/or managing habitat on wildlife areas. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Supports and provides technical input for projects.
  • Implements Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) on wildlife areas, including compliance with applicable laws, label restrictions, and record keeping associated with chemical applications.
  • Performs adaptive management on habitat enhancement activities.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as tractors, mini-excavators, and farm implements.
  • Surveys and monitors habitats, and native and invasive plant species.  
  • Recommends best management practices for managing habitat.
  • Submits periodic progress reports outlining the current status, finding, plans, and recommendations.

Performs field investigations.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Compliance monitoring of permit, lease, and agreement provisions.
  • Survey for emerging issues (user conflicts, habitat damage, facility, and infrastructure condition, etc.). 

Recreation Management.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages recreation opportunities and recommends improvements to supervisor.  
  • Makes management recommendations based on field investigations.

Facilities, infrastructure, and equipment management. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify deficiencies in facilities, infrastructure and equipment and recommends solutions.
  • Repairs, maintains, and ensures the safety and proper working order of capital facilities, recreation developments, and equipment.

Community involvement and outreach.  Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responds to public inquiries and represents WDFW at events such as sportsman’s show, school programs, wildlife-themed festivals, etc.

Supervise Natural Resource Technician 2’s within the Chelan Wildlife Area.  Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and respond to fluctuating workloads. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. 65% fieldwork – 35% office work.  
    2. Fieldwork includes working in wetlands or upland shrubsteppe/forest habitats, operating tractors, heavy equipment, pickups, ATV’s, UTV’s, towing trailers, herbicide application equipment. 
    3. Occasionally transporting equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds for up to 300 feet over uneven terrain.
  • Schedule: 
    1. 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Monday –Thursday.
    2. Depending on workload and season incumbent may be required to work weekends and outside of the standard schedule.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Daily travel to field sites and occasional travel (up to 10%) required for trainings or meetings. 
    2. Possibility of overnight travel. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Vehicles, 4-wheel drive pickups, UTV’s/ATV’s), heavy equipment (e.g., tractor, excavator, skid steer, trailers), implements (e.g., rock rake, disc, sprayer, mower), and hand power tools (e.g., drill, grinder, saw).
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Interacts with the public while in the field.  Routine public response via phone and email. 
    2. Works with county and other state agency workers occasionally. Deals with private businesses, large and small, during the purchase of materials, may at times work with enforcement officers, district biologists, and other agency personnel.

 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. 

    And

  • One (1) year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research. 

    Or

  • Equivalent education/experience. 

Please Note:  A Master’s degree or Ph.D. degree in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License. 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License – required within the six (6) months of employment.
  • First Aid – required within the six (6) months of employment.
  • ATV and UTV certification – required within the six (6) months of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience with:

  • One (1) year professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management.
  • Monitoring vegetation, wildlife populations and recreational use.
  • Working on management and enhancement of shrubsteppe, riparian, wetland, and forest plant communities.
  • Operating motor vehicles, ATV’s, UTV’s, herbicide application equipment, and farm and construction equipment.
  • Heavy equipment and farm equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Computers and other communication technology.
  • Protection of cultural resources.
  • ESRI ArcMap (GIS mapping systems) and GPS to gather information and generate maps.
  • Grant writing, technical writing, and public speaking.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and practices of land management, technical habitat processes, elements of habitat for wildlife and fish, and wildlife habitat management techniques.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships.
