Salary– $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly

Our Spawning Ground Surveyors, 

  • Conduct adult salmonid spawning ground surveys, identifying and enumerating adult salmonids (live and dead) and redds. 
  • Use GPS devices to mark redd locations.
  • Capture, identify, enumerate, handle, and tag and/or mark salmonids (juveniles and adults) for mark/recapture programs and distribution monitoring.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, operation and removal of monitoring structures and devices for adult and juvenile salmonid monitoring such as traps and weirs.
  • Enter data into dataloggers and PDAs.
  • Collect broodstock for established enhancement and hatchery programs.
  • Perform the sampling and spawning of fish at hatcheries.
  • Accurately record and proof data collected during field activities.
  • Use a computer at the regional office or in the field to enter data into established spreadsheets and/or databases (e.g., Traps, Weirs, Surveys database and carcass tagging spreadsheets).
  • Download information from various handheld data collection devices such as data loggers, GPS units, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag readers and coded-wire tag (CWT) detectors.
  • Ensure scale cards, CWT snouts, DNA and otolith sample collections are complete, properly documented and submitted in a timely manner.



WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Approximately 85% of work occurs in a non-office, field environment and will include conducting spawning ground surveys by foot or cata-raft in whitewater conditions (class I-III), operating, sampling, and tagging salmonids and other species at traps and/or weirs, installing and removing fish monitoring equipment. 
    2. Work occurs in all weather conditions and on slippery or wet surfaces. The ability to lift large fish up to 30 lbs. and rarely up to 100 lbs. is required. Walking up to 15 miles per day, carrying up to 70 lbs. for short distances, and sampling spawned out carcasses with strong odors is required. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Work is 24/7 and unscheduled. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Daily travel from the duty station to field locations with a departmental or personal vehicle. Overnight travel may be required.   
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Basic hand and carpentry tools, winches, pulleys and blocks, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, 4×4 vehicles, 200’ beach seines, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag injectors, PIT tag readers, coded-wire tag (CWT) detectors, GPS units, weighing scales, handheld data loggers, and computers.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with other departmental personnel, personnel from other agencies, commercial fisheries, and the public. 

 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. 

 

OR 

 

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences or closely allies field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Valid Driver’s License (driving record abstract may be requested at the time of interview).
  • Basic CPR and First Aid Training (can be completed within one month of hire).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Ability to: 

  • Identify salmonids and other fish species in larval, juvenile and/or adult life stages.
  • Identify salmonid redds.
  • Do advanced functions in MS Excel and Access.
  • Operate handheld GPS and data logger devices.

Knowledge of: 

  • Resistance board and fixed panel adult fish weirs.
  • Operation of rotary screw and fence-panel (with live box) juvenile traps.
  • Fish marking and tagging protocols.
  • Fishery monitoring, observing, and sampling.
  • Commercial fishing gear types and methods.
  • The basic operations of motorized vessels
  • How to operate CWT and PIT tag detectors.
