Salary– $2,738.00 – $3,535.00 Monthly

Our Recreation Technician,

  • Maintains positive communications with private land cooperators.
  • Posts hunting access signs throughout District Two using pickup trucks, ATV’s, t-posts, drill motors, and post pounders to clearly mark private lands enrolled in WDFW access programs.
  • Installs and maintains hunting access points and kiosks.
  • Assists with entering and maintaining reservations for the Hunt by Reservation Only program in District Two.
  • Distributes and collects Register to Hunt and Hunting Only by Written Permission slips.
  • Maintains an ArcGIS database for identifying NEW properties to enroll in the access program, creating polygons for new properties in the program, and deleting unenrolled properties.
  • Works collaboratively with WDFW staff to collect Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) samples at hunter check-stations, from taxidermists and meat processors, at drop-off locations with sample collection receptacles, and opportunistically from road-killed deer.
  • Assists with training of staff and volunteers on proper collection, labeling, preservation, and shipping of biological samples.
  • Manages biological samples including proper organization, storage, and shipment to approved labs.
  • Organizes and enters data in a timely manner using ArcGIS Survey123 and associated web-based platforms.
  • Reviews data to ensure data quality.
  • Under the direction of the Private Lands Biologist, applies weed suppression, including identifying, mixing, storing, spraying and record keeping of pesticides while using a tractor, ATV, and mower to control spread of noxious weeds within habitat plots on private lands.
  • Assists with seeding grass/forbs on private lands using a tractor, no-till drill, ATV, and/or broadcast seeder.
  • Assists with the planting of trees and shrubs for habitat enhancements.
  • Assists the Private Lands Biologist with evaluations of Conservation Reserve Program sites for habitat establishment and Mid-Contract Management.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Work occurs in the field, with 90% of the workweek spent outdoors. Work includes long hours in inclement weather, working along busy highways, climbing over and around logjams and wood debris, walking on uneven or slippery terrain, carrying up to fifty (50 lbs.) of field gear, working in remote areas – sometimes in or near rattlesnake habitats. 
    2. 10% of work will occur in or around the office. This work includes typical office hazards, and using a heavy backpack sprayer, operating an ATV, and safely handling knives, blades and needles as needed. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. Work will include evenings and weekends, occasionally more than 8 hours per day but maintaining a 40-hours workweek.   
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Vehicle travel up to 250 miles per day to post private properties with WDFW signs. Must be willing to travel across Eastern Washington as needed to collect CWD samples. Rarely overnight travel may be required for training. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Tractor, ATV, no-till drills, broadcast seeders, mowers, trailers, chainsaw, sprayer, GPS, smartphone, laptop computer, hand tools, sampling tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Represents the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in a professional manner. Occasionally deals with conflict when delivering agency information. 

 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker, or equivalent. 
    1. Natural Resource Worker 1 – For example: Fencing, weed management, unskilled forest, agricultural, and/or aquatic land management labor.  Work is performed under close supervision and as a member of an organized crew.

 

Please Note: College level work in the field of fish, wildlife, or habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science may substitute year-for-year for experience.

Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Valid Driver’s License. 
  • Pesticide Applicator License (can be obtained within 6 months of hire). 
  • ATV Safety Certification (can be obtained within 12 months of hire). 
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (can be obtained within 12 months of hire). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed college level coursework in the field of fish, wildlife, habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree.
  • Hunter’s Safety Course certification and/or training. 
  • Current possession of a Public Operator Pesticide License within Washington State.

Experience:  

  • Working with volunteers and elementary school science classes.
  • Working with biological data collection and knowledge of chronic wasting disease epidemiology, ecology, and management.
  • Collecting, processing, storing, and shipping diagnostic specimens.

Knowledge of: 

  • Heavy equipment and farm implements.
  • Weed management techniques.
  • The various Private Lands Access Programs (Feel Free to Hunt, Hunt by Reservation, etc.)
