Salary– $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly

Our Angler Interviewers, 

  • Conduct interviews with boat and shore anglers on/near the river.
  • Record all data onto hard-copy interview forms, review data for accuracy, and drop off weekly at designated area in assigned duty station.
  • Travel to multiple field sites on the river.
  • Observe the number of vehicles and boat trailers present and record data onto effort count forms.
  • Conducts tie in counts by counting all anglers via pontoon boats.
  • Identify and sample salmon harvested by anglers.
  • Record biological data (species, length, sex, mark status, etc.) onto creel forms, scale cards and head tags.
  • Collect samples from harvested salmon (scales, snouts with coded wire tags, tissue, and otoliths).
  • Perform spawning ground surveys, which requires identifying, recording, flagging, and monitoring salmonid redds and live/dead fish counts within selected reaches.
  • Perform biological collection of dead fish which includes sampling for adipose and dorsal fin mark status (hatchery or wild origin), scale sampling (for age and origin), coded wire tags (stock composition and origin), jaw tags, DNA samples, or other biological samples as needed.
  • Assists with adult salmon traps and at hatchery facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Fieldwork includes standing, walking, and driving on rough and uneven terrain, working near fast-flowing water, in all weather conditions, and being near busy parking areas and roadways.
    2. Field work can be strenuous while walking in or along streams, crawling over logjams, wading across riffles, handling knives and dead fish, carrying sampling equipment and/or equipment such as boats weighting up to forty (40) lbs. in and out of vehicles.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Four, 10-hour shifts per week, with randomized study schedule days.
    2. Generally, two weekday shifts and two weekend shifts per week. Holiday work will not be required.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Employees will be provided state agency vehicles to commute between duty stations and field locations.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Coded-wire tag (CWT) wand, filet knife, measuring tape, forceps/tweezers, scale cards, head bags and tags, data forms, boots, rain gear, high visibility vests, and WDFW logo hat and shirt.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with the public to communicate information and conduct interviews. Can occasionally deal with conflict when delivering agency information. Encounters with law enforcement and military personnel can be expected.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR 

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences or closely allies field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Knowledge of sportfishing regulation.

Experience: 

  • Identifying and sampling salmonids.
  • Identifying inland fish species.
  • Operating non-motorized watercraft in river type waters.
