Salary– $3,294.00 – $4,286.00 Monthly

Our Coastal Groundfish Age Reader,

  • Applies ageing criteria and a complex mix of pattern recognition and independent judgement to produce precise age estimates for groundfish and pelagic species.
  • Assists in developing criteria for determining ages of other, previously unstudied groundfish and pelagic fish.
  • Logs incoming samples in preparation of age analysis.
  • Performs data entry for age and other relevant information in Marine Fish Science’s Biological Data System.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is done primarily in a laboratory setting with hot surfaces.
    2. Sitting or standing for long periods of time while performing tasks that require repetitive movement. 
  • Schedule:
    1. Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.
    2. Overtime may periodically occur depending on business needs.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Periodic travel to conferences and workshops.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Hydraulic pressure presses, microscopes, and computers
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Other lab and port sampling staff daily, and other collaborators periodically.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute year-for-year for experience.
 

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, AND four (4) years of experience as a Scientific Technician.

Or

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND four (4) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge and experience in:

  • Processing structures for ageing.
  • Performing data entry.

Ability to:

  • Read and interpret otolith patterns using standard age reading equipment.
  • Read, research, and understand scientific literature as it applies to ageing fish.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science and/or Natural Resource Management.
  • Ability to apply Break-and-Burn Technique for ageing otoliths.
  • Knowledge of WDFW groundfish sampling programs.
