The Sustainability Manager will provide leadership in fulfilling CIIS’ fifth commitment to “advocate sustainability and social justice.” In keeping with this commitment and with current best practices in higher education, the Sustainability Manager will partner across constituencies, divisions, and departments to develop, initiate, and coordinate a university-wide program of ecological sustainability practices and initiatives. They will also work toward centralizing and making visible–to both internal and external audiences–the research, teaching, and activism in the areas of sustainability and ecological justice that are already happening at CIIS. By demonstrating CIIS’ existing commitments and leadership in these areas, the Sustainability Project Manager’s work will enhance the value and appeal of a CIIS education while holding the university community accountable to its highest aspirations.

Supervised by the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in recognition of the interconnected nature of sustainability and social justice, this is a 0.5 FTE, flexible, hybrid position able to work on campus and remotely.

Duties and Responsibilities

As this is a new position, the Sustainability Manager will be involved in co-creating its scope in response to the University’s emergent needs. Duties and responsibilities may include:

1. Systems and Operations

  • Provide both visionary support and practical guidance toward defining, assessing, meeting, and exceeding the University’s sustainability goals
  • Assess environmental impact of CIIS’ physical plant and practices, working toward becoming a Certified Green Business as defined by SF Environment by meeting and exceeding specific benchmarks
  • Pursue AASHE (Association of Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Ed) Stars Certification
  • Advise and make recommendations to Facilities & Operations staff on sustainable procurement, energy usage, and other policies, including making budget recommendations for sustainability needs beyond Year 1
  • Help research and develop policies and procedures related to climate emergencies as they impact faculty, staff, and students

2. Education and Training

  • Monitor and report the university’s progress in multiple measures of sustainability against the baseline assessment data collected by the CIIS Green Team
  • Working with the Office of Communications, make discoverable and visible all sustainability-related course offerings, certificate programs, research projects, and activism for prospective and current students, faculty, and staff
  • Support the CIIS student, faculty, and staff community in making sustainable choices with regard to work, school, and personal life
  • Support the creation of student Sustainability Fellowships
  • Collaborate with the CIIS library to develop resource lists around sustainability
  • Create promotional and educational materials by writing, editing, and designing content for brochures, fliers, bulletin board displays, newsletters, sustainability guides, and training materials

3. Community and Relationship Building

  • Serve as a liaison between various campus entities to assure communication and resource coordination for sustainability programs and projects
  • Maintain an active social media presence for sustainability at CIIS
  • Collaborate with the CIIS Green Team, the Faculty Climate Chaos Committee, and other constituent groups
  • Collaborate with the Development department to pursue funding opportunities for greening initiatives
  • Develop a strategy for building relationships and reciprocity with the indigenous stewards of the land on which CIIS is sited and investigate how CIIS can begin and maintain right relationship with these tribal communities

4. Additional responsibilities, including the supervision of student workers, may be assigned based on operational needs

Job Requirements:

Qualifications

  • BA or MA in a sustainability-related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in sustainability work
  • Management and supervisory experience required
  • Experience in the higher education setting preferred
  • Ability to build a program from the ground up and work in a self-directed manner
  • Group facilitation and listening skills
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of sustainability practices
  • Skill in designing, writing, and editing promotional materials
  • Ability to work effectively with ethnically and culturally diverse student populations and employee teams
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form
