Salary– $2,738.00 – $3,535.00 Monthly

Our Natural Resource Technician,

Conducts forest, oak, woodland, and prairie edge restoration work on the Scatter Creek Wildlife Area. Tasks include: 

  • Plans and implements projects designed to maintain, enhance, or restore ecosystems, wildlife habitat, or public access to Wildlife Area lands.
  • Projects include activities such as brush mowing, slash piling and burning, tree cutting and limbing, harrowing, seeding, planting, broom pulling and herbicide application.

Maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles, to ensure safe and effective operation and conditions for both staff and the public. Tasks include:

  • Maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, trailers, mowers, spray systems, UTV’s, and chainsaws.

Performs administration. Tasks include: 

  • Performs Wildlife Program and Wildlife Area administrative tasks including Bimonthly reporting, purchasing materials, training, meeting with other programs to ensure alignment of priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work Setting, including hazards:   

  1. Work occurs primarily in the field but also in office and shop settings. Exposure to inclement weather, walking, bending, stooping, moving, and carrying up to 40 lbs. on difficult terrain, and working with power equipment is required.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Standard business hours, Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. May be expected to adjust work schedule to meet business needs.
    2. A flexible work schedule will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Overnight travel is not anticipated.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Trucks, trailers, tractors, mowers, harrows, seeders, various implements, sprayers, power and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Periodic interaction with the public in both field and office settings.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker of equivalent.
    1. Natural Resource Worker 1 – For example: Fencing, weed management, unskilled forest, agricultural, and/or aquatic land management labor.  Work is performed under close supervision and as a member of an organized crew.

College-level work in the field of fish, wildlife or habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science may substitute year-for-year for experience.

Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Pesticide Applicator’s license (can be obtained within 3 months of employment).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Wildlife habitat enhancement and management methods.
  • Heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Small engine tools such as, chainsaws, brush cutters.
  • Computer software (Office).

Ability to:

  • Manage projects and workloads.
  • Identify wildlife and plant species.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Follow safety procedures and identify hazards.
