WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. During field season (March – November) work is conducted both in the office and in the field.
    2. Fieldwork consists of walking up to six (6) miles of stream daily or rafting up to ten (10) miles of stream daily. Rafting streams occurs over a wide range of flows and river conditions and includes navigating around rocks and trees during high and low flows. Walking streams requires navigating slippery, uneven terrain. Work is conducted outdoors throughout the year including during periods of high heat and freezing temperatures. Work also occurs at hatchery facilities and weirs. Some chemicals are used frequently, primarily fish anesthetics such as Aqui-S and MS-222.
  • Schedule:
    1. Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Position may require the use of a 4-10 work schedule (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM) to facilitate travel times to field sites or long survey reaches. Working some weekends and holidays in spring to facilitate 24/7 trapping of target species may be required.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Overnight travel is rare but may occasionally be required to attend professional conferences or meetings.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Work in the office setting requires using common office tools including computers, laptops, copiers, Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel, and Access, software such as P4 (PIT tagging), DNR Garmin (GPS data), and R-studio (statistics and graphing).
    2. Field work includes use of trucks, snowmobiles, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), and rafts.  Fish sampling tools include angling equipment, backpack electroshockers, coded-wire tag detectors, knives, scissors, tweezers, PIT tag detectors, global positioning system (GPS) devices, anesthetics scales, measuring boards, waders, boots, lifejackets, hard hats, dry-suits, and neoprene gloves.

Customer Interactions:

  1. Interacts with WDFW employees, external scientists and biologists, staff from Douglas County PUD, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Yakama and Colville tribes, WDFW agency technical and policy staff, and the public.
