Salary– $2,612.00 – $3,370.00 Monthly

Inspecting Recreational and Commercial Watercraft at Mandatory Check Stations.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspect watercraft at check stations with Enforcement Officers for AIS, conducts routine inspections, identifies, and preserves possible AIS from watercraft, report watercraft if infested with AIS so that it will be decontaminated with hot water pressure washer.
  • Records collected information on electronic Tablets.
  • Interacts with the public, conducts standardized interview to obtain watercraft data, performs routine data entry.
  • Check station set up and removal, transport trailered electronic reader boards, deploy signage alerting watercraft of check stations, tasks require ability to lift 75 lbs., some travel and outdoor work that may include overnight stays.
  • Supervise and assist in the training of watercraft inspection personnel.

Office Support.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect, organize, and compile information from check station operations.
  • Complete and submit weekly activity reports.
  • Perform quality control on information collected at inspection stations.

Equipment Maintenance.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains vehicles, maintains inspection station site, trailered electronic reader boards, and electronic tablets in a safe and working order.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Approximately 80% fieldwork and 20% office work – fieldwork includes working outdoors, around water, and on land.
    2. Work is sometimes conducted independently in remote locations, occasionally during inclement weather and/or air quality, during the day and night, it includes rarely lifting/moving 75 pounds of equipment, gear, and tools.
  • Schedule:
    1. Work week will be Sunday to Saturday, work is 24/7 – unscheduled and is dependent on when check stations are scheduled, often on weekends and holidays.
    2. Typically, 10 hours a day – 40 hours a week, but occasionally will exceed the daily and weekly hours, and will be required to respond on short notice to infested Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) watercraft during non-scheduled hours.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. This position may require travel throughout the state and overnight travel up to four (4) days at a time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. ½ ton 4×4 trucks, trailers, trailer reader boards, hot-water pressure washer, personal computer, smart phones, and tablets.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with the public at mandatory inspection stations for trailered watercraft and decontaminations of infested AIS watercraft.
    2. Occasionally dealing with conflict when explaining inspections/decontaminations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduation or GED.

          AND

  • Three (3) months of natural resource related labor experience.

        OR

  • Three (3) months experience in any of the following Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programs – Future Farmers of America (FFA), military, vocational program, general laborer, Job Corps, construction, maintenance, landscaping, boating experience, farming, agriculture, forestry, maintenance mechanic, or any type of manual labor, etc.

         OR

  • One (1) year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.

         OR 

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A current valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements: 

  • Must pass criminal background check. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • May be required to obtain one or more specialized skill qualifications or licenses, including but not limited to:
    1. Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Interception Training (WIT) For Zebra/Quagga Mussels (WIT) 1 Certified.
    2. Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Interception Training (WIT) For Zebra/Quagga Mussels (WIT) 2 Certified.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Associates degree in Biology, Fisheries, Wildlife Management, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a closely related field of study.
  • Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Roadside Safety certification.

Experience: 

  • Conducting watercraft Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspections and/or decontamination of watercraft.
  • Using computers, electronic tablets, and data collection applications.
  • Working cooperatively with WDFW Law Enforcement.
