Salary– $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly

Conducts angler creel interviews to estimate catch of target species and incidental impacts to non-target species during freshwater recreational salmon and steelhead fisheries. Tasks include:

  • Perform surveys to assess angling effort, counting angler vehicles and trailers at multiple, pre-determined river locations accessed by motor vehicle.
  • Provide feedback about sampling protocols, and accurately records data into iPad application and on scale card paper form.
  • Sample all Chinook and coho salmon with electronic CWT detection devices.
  • Classify, sort, and enumerate marked (adipose fin-clipped) and unmarked salmon by Coded-Wire Tag (CWT) status.
  • Use a knife to remove snouts from Chinook and Coho salmon with CWTs, which are used to assess stock specific impacts for fisheries modeling.
  • Sample salmon catch to obtain stock composition (DNA taken with scissors), age structure (scales taken with forceps), fish length (length taken by measuring device), and hatchery and natural-origin proportions (mark-status).
  • Contact anglers to conduct creel interviews, traveling by foot to contact bank anglers at river access points and monitoring boat ramps for groups of returning boat anglers.
  • Identify salmonids to species and sex.
  • Observe and record and hatchery or research marks on the fish.
  • Provide sport fishing regulatory information to the public.
  • Act as liaison to regional supervisor on fishery violations observed in the field.
  • Provide written reports on violations and may be called to give testimony informally or in court.
  • Maintain sampling equipment in good working order.

Collect Data. Tasks include: 

  • Legibly record and enter data into electronic devices.
  • Review and tabulate data.
  • Enter data to existing spreadsheets and databases in Excel, Access, or other apps.
  • Proof data already entered to databases using the DFW Fish Apps online data portal.
  • Summarize, prepare, write, text, call in, or email data requested by supervisors or other WDFW management staff.

Perform Equipment Maintenance. Tasks include: 

  • Operate and maintain all equipment including sampling equipment, waders or other wearable gear if provided, and vehicles. Vehicle maintenance includes periodically checking oil level and monitoring fuel and level of washer fluid.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Work occurs primarily in the field and occurs in adverse weather and environmental conditions and includes noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands and fingers, long periods of sitting, squatting, and walking through vegetation.
    2. Work occurs in uneven terrain in and near streams and rivers to obtain angler interviews, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, kneeling, and heavy lifting containers of fish up to 40 lbs. unassisted, working and standing in a confined space, fish blood, slime, slippery surfaces, biting or stinging insects, use of knives, and transporting agency staff and equipment in agency vehicles.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, eight (8) to ten (10) hours per day, between 5:00 AM and 11:00 PM.
    2. Work is all days during the week, including weekends and holidays with overtime required, as assigned. Must be able to work variable days with shifts up to twelve (12) hours including early-morning and late-night hours.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Travel in the North Puget Sound area. No overnight travel requirements, but long drives to collect equipment may be assigned.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. iPad, electronic sampling equipment (CWT detector), knives, forceps, head lamp, measuring board, tally counter, totes and bins, paper forms, labels, scale cards, pencils, pens, clipboard, scissors, WDFW apparel, gloves, rain gear and rubber boots, waders, hip boots, current recreational and commercial sampling manuals.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with WDFW employees, co-managing Tribes, recreational anglers, and the public during data collection. Provides basic information regarding fisheries resources and agency programs and activities. Potentially deals with conflict when providing sport fishing regulatory information to the public.
    2. These positions provide a high-level of customer service to anglers and the public and acts as the liaison to the regional supervisor and enforcement on fishery violations observed in the field.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

  • Graduation from high or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR  

  • Graduation from high or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory of field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Working knowledge of Excel and Word.

Experience in: 

  • Sampling adult salmonids for marks and tags, including scanning fish for coded wire tags (CWT) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags.
  • Using personal computers or mobile devices for data entry and writing to produce accurate and timely work products.
  • Conducting creel surveys.

Ability to: 

  • Identify saltwater and river stage adult salmonids to species.
  • Identify sex of adult salmonids.
