The Carkeek Park Environmental Learning Center is recruiting for enthusiastic and engaging Summer Nature Day Camp Environmental Educators to join the EarthKeepers Nature Day Camp team.   Carkeek Park offers extraordinary opportunities for nature adventures with 220 acres including forests, meadows, wetlands, creeks, and beach access.   

The popular EarthKeeper nature day camp, includes weekly themes such as Nature Detective, Carkeek Park Survivor’s Island, Wild Creativity, Tidepool Exploration, PNW Time Machine and Outdoor Exploration.  

Summer Day Camp Schedule: 

  • June 27th – September 2nd 2022
  • Monday – Friday, 25-40 hours per week. 
  • Shifts will be 6 to 8 hours per day starting between 8:00am – 9:00am (subject to change based on business need). 
  • Mandatory pre-camp training and orientation will be offered the week of June 27th

Pay Rate: $18.17 /hr

Basic Duties:

  • Guiding 8-10 children ages 6-12, in hands-on, environmental education activities
  • Working closely with the Environmental Education team to ensure the success of participants
  • Create curriculum for one day of elementary camp
  • Direct games and activities (including songs and art projects) for 8 – 60 campers
  • Ensure environments are well-maintained, developmentally appropriate and supports the needs of the program and its participants
  • Regularly team-teach with other staff members and 48–60 campers
  • Provide positive transitions that maintain ratios/head counts to minimize the risk of unwanted behaviors
  • Supervise, evaluate, and act as a positive role model for the Jr. Naturalist volunteers, ages 13-16
  • Ability to work, enjoy self, and campers, and keep high energy while exploring Carkeek Park for extended periods of time
  • Be flexible, flexible, flexible

Requirements:  

  • At least 1-year experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting; 
  • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and/or education; 
  • Experience supervising and directing children through programming is highly preferred 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds; 
  • Valid WA driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain;  
  • Commitment to work full summer program;  
  • Maintain positive attitude as a team player; 
  • If hired, must pass criminal background check; must provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and valid government issued ID; sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account. 
  • If hired must be vaccinated for Covid-19 and boosted if eligible

Desired Skills/Abilities:  

  • Experience working with a diversity of youth; 
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants, animals, and ecosystems; 
  • Knowledge of child development and teaching methods; 
  • Ability to develop creative lesson plans; 
  • Experience in visual and creative arts; 
  • Enthusiasm and energy.
