Salary– $3,987.00 – $5,229.00 Monthly

Our Skagit Wildlife Area Assistant Manager,

  • Stabilizes and revegetates disturbed sites within the Skagit Wildlife Area.
  • Implements Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on Skagit Wildlife Area Units (Proper mixing, applying, storing, and recording), and assures compliance with applicable laws, label restrictions, and record keeping associated with agricultural chemical applications to wildlife areas.
  • Performs habitat management.
  • Cultivates native vegetation and forage food plots using predefined methodologies.
  • Conducts field reviews of restored sites, record data for Wildlife Area Manager.
  • Assists with developing and implementing the Skagit Wildlife Area Management Plan.
  • Assists with developing and managing the operating budget.
  • Negotiates and monitors lease agreements on behalf of the state with private sector and non-governmental organizations on land use issues and habitat management issues.
  • Surveys wildlife areas for priority wildlife species as directed by Regional Staff and Wildlife Area Manager.
  • Facilitates and manages public use on the Skagit Wildlife Area through signage and customer interactions.
  • Writes technical reports and management plans for Wildlife Area Manager to review.
  • Assists with assessing and evaluating fish and wildlife habitat management programs.
  • Provides technical information to agricultural business on agricultural land-use permits, and to other agency staff on fish, wildlife, habitat, and recreation on WDFW lands.
  • Attends meetings with external groups and stakeholders.
  • Assists with the development of agricultural leases and other land use permits.
  • Assists with negotiating, writing, implementing, and monitoring agricultural leases and contracts for wildlife enhancement or habitat restoration projects and evaluates the benefits to fish and wildlife.
  • Assists in identification and development of capital improvement projects.
  • Assists with the development of operational spending plan.
  • Assists with grants to maintain/improve wildlife area.
  • Assists with maintenance of Skagit Wildlife Area’s infrastructure, including buildings, grounds, diking system, public use facilities, etc.
  • Analyses and assures safety of facilities.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of estuary preservation and restoration projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Work in inclement weather.
    2. Walking, stooping, bending while carrying gear and equipment up to 40 lbs., over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
    3. Load and transport gear.
    4. Routine and repetitive motions.
    5. Handling birds.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, 8 hours per day, Monday – Friday.
    2. Odd, unusual, and sometimes additional hours per week.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Frequent travel within the Skagit Wildlife Area.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Various tractors, implements, boats and other equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent interactions with the public.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following:
    1. Fisheries.
    2. Wildlife Management.
    3. Natural Resource Science.
    4. Environmental Science.

AND

  • One year of professional experience in one or more of the following:
    1. Fish management or research.
    2. Wildlife management or research.
    3. Habitat management or research.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

Please note:

  • A master’s degree in the applicable science may substitute for one year of the required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Estuary restoration project implementation and monitoring.
  • Wetland/ moist soil development and management.
  • Salmon recovery project implementation/ Habitat enhancement and restoration.
  • Wildlife agricultural enhancement programs/ farming practices.
  • Computer skills to include ArcGIS.
