Job Description:

Urban Sustainability Faculty Cluster Initiative: The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY seeks to accelerate transdisciplinary innovations in Urban Sustainability through the addition of three new faculty positions. These new faculty will work with an existing team who are committed to generating actionable science, offering experiential student learning opportunities, and advancing the socio-ecological paradigm as applied to urban sustainability.  With robust mentoring and research infrastructure support, new hires will be able to establish interdisciplinary connections, link with community groups and policymakers, and work within new research paradigms. We invite applications for the following tenure-track (10 month) positions: atmospheric science (Department of Chemistry), climate justice (Department of Environmental Studies), and climate-adaptive design (Department of Landscape Architecture).

Successful candidates for these three positions will be expected to participate actively and sustainably in this interdisciplinary initiative, “the Urban Sustainability Cluster.”  Participation in the Cluster will be an important criterion in performance evaluations.

The Department of Chemistry is seeking candidates for an academic year, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, starting in the fall of 2022. As part of the Urban Sustainability Cluster, this faculty member will advance scholarship in Atmospheric Science.  The Department of Chemistry offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, with specializations in environmental chemistry, biochemistry, natural products chemistry, and polymer chemistry. The department currently has 14 faculty members distributed among these sub-areas and enrolls about 60 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students.  Major equipment available to faculty include a suite of Orbitrap and triple-quad GC- and LC-MS instruments. Other major equipment includes high resolution ICP-OES and ICP-OES, 600 and 800 MHz NMRs, and scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Full details on instruments are available at https://www.esf.edu/ats/.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program in environmental chemistry. In addition, the applicant will be responsible for teaching 3 courses per year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including at least one graduate-level course focused on environmental chemistry research methods. Other teaching assignments will be determined by the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the Chemistry Department. Faculty are expected to provide service to the college and their home departments and programs by participating in governance as well as providing professional service to the community and their disciplines. As part of the cluster hire, the successful applicant will be expected to actively mentor undergraduate and graduate chemistry majors, including underserved and historically underrepresented students, and participate in K-12 pipelining programs to help build a diverse and representative student population. The applicant must also participate in research on urban sustainability with faculty in the other departments involved in the cluster hire.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications: A PhD in chemistry, atmospheric science, or a related area, with prior experience designing and implementing air quality field sampling and/or monitoring studies.

Preferred Qualifications:  At least 12 months of relevant postdoctoral experience, demonstrated ability to successfully teach graduate and undergraduate courses in chemistry, evidence for the potential to develop an externally supported research program, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants interested in studying air quality as it pertains to environmental justice and/or environmental health would be especially relevant to this cluster hire.

Starting Salary:  commensurate with experience
