Salary– $2,738.00 – $3,535.00 Monthly

Performs technical activities to maintain/improve habitat, species, and/or recreational opportunities.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Implements Wildlife Area projects.
  • Restores, enhances, and maintains wildlife habitats by mowing, disking, seeding, fertilizing, tree plantings, trimming trees, timber work, weed control, etc.
  • Creates/manages/maintains moist soil management projects.
  • Implements Integrated Vegetation Management activities (herbicide application) and properly mixes, applies, records, and stores herbicides.
  • Assists in monitoring land-use per agreements.
  • Operates a variety of small and heavy equipment to include brush cutters, chainsaws ATVs, tractors, and excavators.
  • Manages/maintains public recreational use, opportunities, and infrastructure by walking and clearing trails, updating signs, servicing parking areas, cleaning, and restocking bathrooms.

Maintains capital facilities, wildlife area infrastructure, vehicles, and equipment.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains and repairs Wildlife Area buildings.
  • Maintains and repairs Wildlife Area information kiosks.
  • Repairs or maintains Wildlife Area signage.
  • Assists in implementing capital improvement projects
  • Maintains and services roads, culverts, gates, fences, parking lots, and other capital improvements.
  • Maintains wildlife area vehicles, equipment, and maintenance records.
  • Monitors/assesses/assures safety of Wildlife Area facilities and equipment

Coordinates and communicates within WDFW, with other agencies, and with the public.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Attends agency meetings, meetings with external groups and constituents.
  • Provides information to the public through office and field contacts.
  • Assists in managing activities with cooperative partners and adjacent landowners.
  • Reports violations to the manager or enforcement.
  • Assists in public educational activities (i.e. hunter education classes, outreach programs, etc.)
  • Assists/supports enforcement on activities occurring on Wildlife Area lands.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Primarily field work, which includes exposure to inclement weather including extreme heat or snow, difficult terrain including slippery rocks, steep banks and sticky mud, and water. Hazards include tripping/falling and other things consistent with working with small and large equipment in an outdoor setting or while working from boats or around water.
    2. Some work is performed in an office or shop setting.
    3. Must be able to walk, lift, bend, and stoop – sometimes on uneven terrain and while at times carrying up to 40 pounds of tools and/or equipment.
    4. Drive on primitive roads during all weather conditions. Use 4 x 4 trucks, ATVs, and must be able to load and transport heavy equipment.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Travel within Wildlife Area.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Standard field tools such as shovels, spray equipment, chain saws, other power tools, farm machinery, backhoes, excavators, dozers, ATV’s, trucks, trailers, boats, and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent interactions with the public.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Please note: College education in the field of fish, wildlife, habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or other natural resource related field, may substitute year-for-year for experience.

  • 3 years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 1,

OR

  • Experience in construction, agriculture, vegetation and/or land management that includes operation and maintenance of large equipment such as tractors, backhoes, excavators as well as the operation and maintenance of power equipment such as chainsaws, brush cutters, and mowers.


Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • ATV certification (Agency will provide training. Obtain within first year of employment)
  • Maintain First Aid / CPR / AED Training Certification (Agency will provide training. Obtain within the first year of employment)
  • Washington State Public Operator Pesticide license (Agency will provide training. Obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • CDL A with air brake endorsement – may be required after 1 year of employment (training would be provided).
  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Experience in the following:
    1. Use of agricultural practices and equipment.
    2. Managing and manipulating wetland plant communities (moist soil management).
    3. Identifying Western Washington native plant species.
    4. Working on a farm/ranch.
    5. conducting agricultural enhancement/farming activities.
    6. Operating heavy equipment.
    7. Conducting wildlife habitat enhancement activities.
