Salary- Rate of Pay: $21.00/hour

Campsite/Social trail tasks:

  • Remove/ecologically restore  inappropriately located campsites and social trails:
    • Reduce/remove fire rings, hide rocks and charcoal, collect trash in area, de-compact soil.
  • Obscure/obstruct campsite/social trails blending closed site in with surroundings, naturalize area.
  • Reduce/maintain appropriate sites.
  • Remove non-native invasive vegetation.
  • Document work accomplished according to photo or device protocols.
  • May work alongside Wilderness Archeology team modifying work tasks as needed to protect cultural resources.

Meadow restoration tasks:

  • Obstructing closed access trails, salvaging plants, generating soil on site, restoring topography, maintaining, and replanting salvaged plants, gather and spread  local seeds and duff to help naturalize the project areas, and document project progress (photos, GPS work accomplished).
  • Pothole Meadow Restoration Project (October 2022):
    • Pothole meadow is a small meadow at the west end of Tuolumne Meadows, which includes numerous head cuts / nick points that are resulting in ditches (5 feet deep in some cases and 15 feet wide) draining the meadow.  Restoration tasks include:
      • salvaging plants using excavator or skid steers, maintaining plants,  placing meadow mats to reduce soil compaction, mixing soil and wood chips, using dump trucks to transport soil / chip mixture into meadow, using machines to place and tamp soil in ditches filling the ditches, replanting salvaged plants, and placing erosion control mats and wattles as needed.

This opportunity is ideal for an emerging professional who is eager to begin a career in civil service and/or gain additional experience in preparation for graduate school. The successful applicant will be provided an immersive experience that will afford them the chance to work on projects throughout YOSE, further enhancing and enriching their knowledge base related to the resource management responsibilities of a federal land management agency.

Job Qualifications:
  • Coursework or field experience in botany, ecology, forestry, or a closely related field in the biological sciences.
  • Familiarity with ecological processes and flora of the Central Sierra;
  • Experience in performing field work and an ability to follow directions regarding data collection;
  • Experience in data entry and managements;
  • Prior experience on a field crew in front/ backcountry, working in all types of weather.
  •  Overnight backpacking experience  3+ nights
  • Ability to contribute to a safe work and living cultures;
  • Experience with using handheld GPS and data collection devices such as Collector, Avenza, etc.;
  • Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally to a diverse audience; and
  • Experience working with federal land management agencies, members of the public and non-profit organizations.
  • WFA / WFR and CPR training welcome.

Additional requirements:

  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Possess a commitment to personal and team member safety, and communicate perceived safety threats immediately;
  • Possess a favorably adjudicated background clearance; and
  • Must be motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail oriented.
