Salary- $2,738.00 – $3,535.00 Monthly

Habitat Improvement and Maintenance projects.   Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Control noxious weeds using a variety of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods – biological, chemical, cultural, and mechanical.
  • Mow grass fields and other vegetation.
  • Clean out ponds and maintain or improve developing springs
  • Controlled burning.
  • Utilize irrigation system equipment and pumps to water alfalfa food plot and grass fields.

Construct and/or maintain fencing.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain and/or construct internal pasture fence, perimeter boundary fence, and 8’ high elk fence.
  • Follow Blue Mountain Wildlife Area standard operation procedures for wildlife compatible fencing.
  • Use a variety of tools such as, chainsaws, rock drills, power staplers, and miscellaneous hand tools.

Infrastructure, equipment, and vehicle operations and maintenance.  Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on barns, shops, storage buildings, and bunk houses.

Administration, training, reporting, and record keeping.   Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Maintain herbicide spray records and weekly work activity report.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Working hazards include working on rough terrain, canyon rims, loose rock, rattlesnakes, extreme weather exposure, loud noise, pesticide exposure, large machinery with Power Take Off (PTO) drivelines, operating vehicles on narrow mountain roads, and working alone in remote locations with limited communication.
  • Schedule:
    1.  Monday – Thursday – 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – (4-10’s).
  • Travel Requirements:  
    1. Daily travel from Clarkston Shop to the wildlife area worksites, which can be up to 2 hours.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Both wheeled and track-type tractors, 4×4 trucks, ATV’s, utility trailers, gas powered pumps, gas powered hand tools including chain saws and trimmers, ATV/Truck mounted herbicide spray units, and a variety of hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Frequent interactions with the public, wildlife area recreationalists, neighboring private landowners, ranchers utilizing nearby United States Forest Service (USFS) grazing allotments, Nez Perce Tribe hunters, USFS, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Employees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3 years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 1, or equivalent experience.
    1. Natural Resource Worker 1 – For example: Fencing, weed management, unskilled forest, agricultural, and/or aquatic land management labor.  Work is performed under close supervision and as a member of an organized crew.

        OR 

  • College level work in the field of fish, wildlife, or habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science may substitute year-for-year for experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience with computers and various software.
  • Experience building/maintaining stock fence.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Washington State Public Operator Pesticide License (Training will be provided).
  • Blue Card Fire Fighter Training certification.
  • Commercial Driver’s License.
