Salary- $38,000 to $40,000

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish and maintain automatic ground observation systems (spectrometers, cameras, environmental sensors, vegetation sensors, soil sensors, etc.) in Illinois and Nebraska.
  • Routine monitoring, inspection, troubleshooting and repair are required to ensure all system components collect data correctly and continuously throughout the project period.
  • Conduct manual field measurements and sample collections using different instruments/tools, and compile, process, organize and document collected data and samples in the laboratory.
  • Coordinate and assist lab members with field, airborne and laboratory experiments, particularly with regards to instrument installation, uninstallation, maintenance, calibration, operation and other necessary materials and supplies.
  • Collect, label and process samples from satellite images to facilitate related research.

EDUCATION:   Required: Bachelor’s degree.  Preferred: Master’s degree; environmental, ecology, agriculture or related fields.

EXPERIENCE:  Required: A minimum of six months’ machinery or engineering work experience.

Preferred: Research experience in the field and in the laboratory; experience working on farms and with farmers.

TRAINING, LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:  Required: Valid U.S. driver’s license to drive to field research sites.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Required: Very strong hands-on skills. Evidence of consistent use of good judgment, discretion, and tactful communication. Energy and enthusiasm for expressing the value of diverse cultures, fostering empathy, and improving organizations in the areas of access and representation. Knowledge and experience with office software and ability to learn custom systems. Ability to handle multiple priorities without direct supervision. Preferred: knowledge on environmental, ecology, agriculture or related fields.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:  Frequent summer field trips in the Champaign County, Illinois, and some field trips in other counties in Illinois and Nebraska; pre-dawn, sunset and weekend field works are sometimes needed. Work in field may include hot and humid weather with biting insects. Ability to carry up to 40 pounds for a short duration may be required.
