Situated within the Division of Inclusive Excellence and Student Success (IESS), First Peoples provides services designed to enhance the educational and co-curricular experience of a diverse student population and improve retention and graduation rates. First Peoples provides holistic advising support to students, builds student leadership skills, and coordinates campus-wide educational and cultural programming in support of diversity and inclusion. The Director is an important campus resource person regarding areas of race, culture, gender, sexuality, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and should be familiar with methodologies and best practices that will advance racial equity and social justice. The Director works closely with the Associate Dean of Climate and Belonging Education on equity education, community-building, and belonging activities for students, staff, and faculty, and reports to the Associate Vice President of Inclusive Excellence and Student Success.
Essential Functions
  • Assume overall responsibility for the strategic leadership and management of First Peoples, including the Student Equity and Arts Lounge, Multicultural Scholars Program, and related department events and programs.
  • Provide for a qualified, committed, and diverse staff by recruiting, developing, motivating, supervising, and evaluating full- and part-time staff. These include the following:
      • Multicultural Initiatives Coordinator.
      • Trans & Queer Initiatives Coordinator.
      • Undocumented/Underserved Student Support Specialist.
  • Provide oversight and stewardship in the development of a comprehensive range of services, resources, and programs that advance equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence, particularly for Evergreen students, including college-wide initiatives, such as learning opportunities (e.g., speakers, resources, topical discussion groups), community-building events (e.g., SEAL potlucks and events, Multicultural and Lavender graduations), and retention-related projects aimed at multicultural student populations.
  • Facilitate the design and implementation of culturally responsive engagement and retention programs for students, including a comprehensive program designed to enhance intercultural awareness and ways to explore the intersection of race, gender, religion, socio-economic class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, national origin, and many other aspects of identity; programs should contain strong outreach, academic and personal support, community-building, referral services, and tracking of activities.
  • Design salient goals, objectives, and learning outcomes that demonstrate a guiding theoretical framework, a programmatic grounding in the research and literature, and an intentional alignment with the college’s mission and values.
  • Set department goals and develop implementation strategies, establish learning outcomes, develop effective assessment tools, coordinate assessment efforts, and prepare annual reports and summaries for the department.
  • Manage student concerns that merit a higher-level review, serve as a contact for students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members needing assistance and direction related to student support services; provide elevated response to students’ requests for assistance with academic, personal, or professional planning and problem-solving.
  • Represent First Peoples on the Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team
  • Oversee the Bias Incident Response Team and work on updating Evergreen’s Bias Incident Response Policy.
  • Provide faculty consultation, to support the needs of students of color, LGBTQ+, undocumented/DACAmented students, and/or to enhance awareness of multicultural issues in the classroom.
  • Lead and partner with New Student Programs to implement programs relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion for New Student Orientation.
  • Consult with Admissions to host Preview Days and Open Houses.
  • Manage the budget for the unit by monitoring expenditures and assessing needs for funding to accomplish the goals of the unit.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of an innovative and effective multicultural leadership program for student employees associated with the Student Equity and Arts Lounge.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Climate and Belonging Education, lead the planning and coordination of annual campus-wide inclusive excellence programs and events such as the Equity Symposium and the design and implementation of DEI trainings.
  • Lead identity month celebrations, and other programs that promote engagement with concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Partner with other college units (i.e. Student Activities, Academic and Career Advising, Student Wellness Services, Academics, and Residential and Dining Services) to design and implement campus programming to advance equity and inclusion.
  • Lead and participate in hiring committees, college task forces, and other projects as directed by the Associate Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Student Success.
  • Maintain communications with the college administration, faculty, and staff to enhance project visibility and effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a strategic plan for student multiculturalism that reflects the unique nature of the college.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Services, Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic and Career Advising, Access Services, Upward Bound and TRiO Programs, and Registration to ensure the smooth transition of students into the college environment.
  • Act as a resource person with the various communities (Tacoma, Olympia, the Longhouse and Native Pathways Programs) from which Evergreen students have come or in which they reside.
  • Perform health and safety reporting requirements.
