Salary- $34,368.00 – $44,412.00 Annually
Duties
Our Scientific Technicians,
- Conduct steelhead redd count surveys by accurately recording observed redds and live and dead fish counts within selected stream reaches of Clallam and West Jefferson counties.
- Maintain accurate field records.
- Communicate with private landowners, state, and federal agencies to facilitate access of survey areas.
- Collect daily spawner data, including redd counts and GPS data.
- Prepare daily data summaries.
- Enter raw data in spreadsheets and databases.
- Communicate spawning activity with other technicians and biologists within the District 16 team.
- Help other state, federal and tribal biologists in the field.
- Work with local hatcheries as needed during spawning periods or construction.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work is performed outdoors and is often done in inclement weather, within varying stream flows.
- Considerable driving and hiking; usual daily hiking distance is 3-5 miles but can be up to 15 miles on occasion into remote areas on private and public timberlands.
- Frequent walking along streams on slick boulders, wading riffles, or maneuvering watercraft (i.e., raft, hard side drift boat, and pontoon boat).
- Lifting equipment that can weigh up to or greater than 40 pounds.
- Occasional work in an office setting and on a computer.
Schedule:
- Typically, work schedule is 40 hours per week Monday – Friday; however this position is considered non-scheduled as work hours may vary due to inclement weather, length of daylight and river conditions.
- Weekend and evening work may be required.
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional travel to local or regional areas to conduct business or attend training – driving to stream survey locations via state and county roads, as well as local travel along streams on private logging roads throughout the district.

- Waders, wading staff, GPS, radios, CWT wands, knives, forceps.
