Salary- $14.42 – $18.48 Hourly

Duties

Our At Sea Research Survey Anglers,

Participate in at-sea research surveys of the marine groundfish species that inhabit Washington’s coastal waters from the Washington/Oregon border to the Sekiu River -Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Deploy on multiple single day trips on agency research vessels, chartered research vessels or commercial fishing vessels.
  • Angle for fish with rod and reel gear according to specified protocols.
  • Measure time fished with a stopwatch.
  • Assist with the loading, unloading, and cleaning of scientific and fishing survey gear.
  • Perform light gear maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:

  • Work settings may include being onboard vessels while at-sea, recreational or commercial fishing docks, and office environments – at-sea duties may be performed onboard agency-owned vessels, chartered vessels, or commercial fishing vessels in unprotected coastal waters where sea state conditions can deteriorate quickly.
  • Assigned duties and tasks are expected to be completed in any sea state condition the vessel captain and lead biologist deem safe – work will be conducted in rough seas, in severe inclement weather, and on slippery/uneven/steep/moving decks and docks it includes climbing steps/ladders and hearing/communicating over loud motors and other vessel equipment is necessary to successfully perform all tasks.
  • Other potential hazards include vessel mechanical failure and risk of puncture wounds and lacerations from sampling equipment, knives, or fish spines.

Schedule: 

  • This schedule is highly variable and very demanding, fieldwork is 24/7, unscheduled, working up to 60 hours per week – schedule flexibility is crucial as work is dictated by ocean/weather conditions as well as by vessel schedules.
  • This position is on-call, involving approximately 20 days of work from March through May and 10 days of work from September to October – workdays are generally 8-14 hours long and may involve working days, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Travel Requirements: 

  • Travel is necessary and will entail multiple nights at hotel/motel accommodations at agency expense.
  • Depending on specific project logistics, meals will be provided for the group as “camp groceries” or individuals will be responsible for acquiring food for personal use from grocery stores or restaurants.
  • When in travel status per diem is available to cover food expenses.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Fishing rods, reels, tackle, and stopwatches.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Extensive time/experience on open, exposed ocean waters.
  • Advanced marine water angling (i.e., rod and reel gears) skills.
  • Extensive experience fishing for rockfish/bottomfish from a vessel.
  • Experience angling for rockfish/bottomfish for scientific survey.
