Salary- $15/hour

Position Summary:

Douglas County PUD offers Student Trainee positions to college bound students during the summer break months. Work start and end dates can accommodate student availability and vary depending on college schedules. The GIS Student position is full time (40 hours per week).

DCPUD utilizes GIS for modeling its electric-distribution and fiber-optic networks for a variety of tasks including system analysis and planning, general maintenance, outage management, construction, etc.  The GIS summer student would assist District personnel in the maintenance of existing data and develop and input new data.  The positions may require some fieldwork for GPS data collection and/or verification of GIS data. The selected student will gain experience with production GIS systems and gain familiarity with the data and tasks expected of full-time GIS professionals in a professional work environment.

 Essential functions:

  • Assist District GIS personnel with modeling network connectivity in a GIS environment
  • Perform data entry and digitization of utility easements in GIS
  • Conduct fieldwork to verify (ground-truth) District assets and equipment
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with diverse groups of people and maintain professional interactions at all times in the workplace.
  • Follow District policies and safety procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Successful applicants must have:

  • Satisfactorily completed a high school education or equivalent
  • Educational focus in computer science, engineering, or related field of study
  • Fundamental computer skills, understanding and experience with Microsoft products (Windows, Office)
  • Professional work attitude, ability and ethic
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a variety of settings
  • Ability work independently and develop solutions for problems as they occur
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Physical capability to work in various environments associated with work departments
  • A valid Washington State driver license and proof of acceptable driving record
  • All successful candidates are required to complete a criminal history background screening and a post offer, pre-employment screening that is consistent with federal law regarding marijuana.

Experience working with ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, etc), understanding of GIS fundamentals, and knowledge of computer networks, databases, and programming experience is a plus.
