Salary- $51,432.00 – $69,264.00 Annually

Responsibilities:

The Highlands Fire Management Officer is responsible for the following:

  • Responsible for hiring permanent fire staff and oversee the hiring of seasonal staff
  • Responsible for assigning work to permanent staff
  • Manage the Highlands Unit fire suppression program
  • Protect life, property, and natural resources from wildland and urban interface fires while ensuring firefighter and public safety.
  • Coordinate Highlands Unit silviculture burn permit program
  • Supervises staff that issue burning permits, including permits for large broadcast burns, silvicultural under-burns and burning that will consume 100 tons or greater of forest slash, thus requiring smoke management approval.
  • Manage Highlands Unit fire training program
  • Assists with the State Fire Academies and other various Interagency/DNR Trainings.
  • Manage Highlands unit fire prevention program
  • Provides supervision and guidance to staff in implementation of fire prevention and fire education activities within the unit. May perform as public speaker for fire prevention and homeowner protection to the public.

Required Qualifications: 
Knowledge and/or experience of:

  • Fire regulation and enforcement.
  • Forest fire prevention.
  • Fire Investigation.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Proven experience in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, mapping and Global Positioning technology.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates may be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

  • In addition to content area expertise, this position requires the incumbent/candidate to have the following knowledge and skills in order to perform supervisory tasks described in the essential functions.

NWCG Qualifications:

  • 2 NWCG Single Resource Boss qualifications.
  • NWCG Type 4 Incident Commander.
  • Must annually pass the work capacity test at the arduous level.
  • Ability to obtain NWCG “Red Card” Qualification of Task Force Leader within two years.

  • Knowledge of employment rules and regulations as they apply to permanent, seasonal career and seasonal DNR employees.
  • Burn permit regulation.
