Salary- $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly

Our Scientific Technician 2, 

  • Assists in the operation of rotary screw traps.
  • Lifts traps with winches to safely remove obstructions and ensures that rotary screw traps are running smoothly.
  • Samples juvenile salmonids to collect biological information by safely using MS-222 (anesthesia) to enumerate the number of fish by species.
  • Collects length and weight samples on captured salmonids.
  • Collects scale samples for age analysis.
  • Safely inserts PIT tags into selected species of fish with syringes.
  • Enters collected data into computer database.
  • Double-checks and verify that data is entered correctly.
  • Checks salmonids for tag retention.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. This position is primarily a field position. Safety hazards include slippery conditions in/near rivers, loud noises, extreme heat and cold, bites and stings from insects or snakes.
    2. Must be able to frequently carry five-gallon buckets filled with water and fish for short distances and seldomly lift up to 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Working hours will vary and will include night shift. Work during weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Travel to trapping sites will be required.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Smolt traps, coded-wire tag and PIT tag scanning equipment, chain saws, come-alongs, and winches.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interaction with the public is limited but may occur.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science, AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.

Licenses:

  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience in:

  • Operation of smolt traps.
  • Identification of juvenile salmonids.
  • PIT tagging fish.
