Salary- $2,864.00 – $4,083.00 Monthly

Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2, 

  • Calculates and feeds fish their daily ration.
  • Monitors fish behavior/health, egg and fish production and disinfects and enumerates eggs.
  • Administers therapeutics, calculates, and administers drugs as prescribed.
  • Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling and records data.
  • Collects fish tissue and fluid samples and records data.
  • Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Accurately fills out and submits agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice forms and other relevant forms.
  • Monitors water flow and quality parameters; takes water samples and readings, e.g., dissolved gases, suspended settle-able solids, and other parameters as required.
  • Drives a planting truck to and from planting sites.
  • Cleans and organizes buildings and outlying areas.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. This position works primarily outside in all types of inclement weather at the Minter Creek Hatchery.
    2. Occasionally other needs may arise within Fish & Wildlife and this position may work at Hupp Springs, Coulter Creek, and other facilities.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    2. Workload demands and weather may require work outside the assigned work hours/days and adjustment of work schedules.
    3. Standby duties are not currently assigned – standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift. While on standby this position will work ten days on and be off 4 days.
    4. When standby is assigned, the response time between September and March is 5 to 10 minutes maximum, from April through August the response time is 30 to 40 minutes or less.
  • Standby:  
    1. All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
    2. Management may determine it is necessary to assign standby in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.
  • Housing: 
    1. Housing is not provided for this position.
  • In-Training Plan: 
    1. The FHS1 performs a variety of technical and scientific fish culture duties, performs hatchery related maintenance, and participates in an agency supervised fish culture training program.
    2. Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. No travel requirements.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. This position works with the Suquamish Tribe, Gig Harbor Purse Seiner Association, department biologists, hatchery staff, and volunteers to accomplish program goals.

Qualifications

This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience.

Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1:

  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field.

          OR

  • Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field.

          OR

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.

Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (Goal Class):

  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program.

OR 

  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR 

  • Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR  

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

For all of the above: 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Commercial driver’s license might be required.
  • Valid Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License might be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of available resources and guides needed to help complete forms and documents correctly and timely.
  • Applicable agency policies and procedures.
  • Basic fish culture techniques – operational and rearing procedures of facility.
  • Water dynamics (e.g., flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).
  • Basic math (add/subtract/divide), calculate and understand quantities and proportions.
  • Computer knowledge – basic understanding of spreadsheets, word processing.
  • Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g., scales, dissolved oxygen meters).
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Safety regulations.
