Our Scientific Technicians, 

  • Interview bank and boat anglers.
  • Collect recreational catch (harvest and release) and biological data, such as, length, sex, presence, or absence of marked fins, and takes scale and DNA samples when required. 
  • Record data and mount scale samples onto gummed cards for future age analysis. 
  • Identify private boats and guided boats, record location of anglers, and record weather and river conditions. 
  • Notify management or enforcement of any possible illegal fishing activities in the area.
  • Compile field notes and biological samples daily. 
  • Provide summarized catch and effort.
  • Conduct the operation and routine maintenance of assigned field gear, vehicles, and sampling equipment.
  • Report monthly vehicle mileage and make appointments for vehicle oil changes when needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Work is performed outdoors – will be required to count and interview anglers at a variety of popular sport fishing boat launch sites and access areas along the rivers. 
    2. Fieldwork is often done in inclement weather – contacting anglers requires driving and hiking miles to fishing areas or driving to creel locations. 
    3. Frequent hiking or boating to long distances of stream over slippery and uneven terrain to reach anglers – long periods of sitting, squatting, walking, sampling hatchery steelhead, carrying, kneeling, lifting (40 lb. max). 
    4. Work is often conducted in times of low light and darkness at the beginning and end of the day – may encounter dangerous wildlife or deal with stinging vegetation. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, work schedule is 40 hours per week, but extra hours may be needed – must work weekends and three random weekdays.
    2. Workdays and hours may change due to weather and river conditions – a flexible hourly and daily work schedule is necessary to perform the assigned tasks – holidays may be included as potential workdays.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Frequent driving is required via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel on private (logging) roads – may have to shuttle State vehicles between Forks, Montesano, and Olympia. 
    2. Some overnight travel may be required for 1 to 2 days to cover shifts in Forks or Montesano.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer or iPad, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.). 
    2. State vehicle, wading shoes or hip boots, rain gear, sampling gear, knives, tweezers, clipboards, notebooks, and personal floatation devices.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. May meet private landowners, anglers, or public that may have negative opinions of governmental agencies and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. 

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

OR 

  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Six (6) months experience sampling recreational fisheries.
  • Knowledge of the salmonid species present in the watersheds, their spawning behavior and general life histories, fishery management methods, and familiarity with the geography of Washington coastal area waters.
  • Strong inter-personal skills that allow to forge and maintain good working relationships with sport anglers and the public.
