The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an environmental specialist to serve as our next Environmental Inspector. The primary undertaking of the Environmental Inspector will be to provide oversight of Design Build activities and aid in the inspection of construction projects. This position will also assure compliance with contract plans and specifications including environmental permits. With this in mind, WSDOT is searching for someone who has a passion for environmental stewardship and wants to make a truly rewarding contribution to WSDOT and the state of Washington.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Environmental Inspector will:

  • Perform Quality Verification (QV) Environmental inspection of construction activities, auditing compliance with contract plans, specifications, permits and commitments.
  • Develop site and work specific pre-activity safety plans in advance of inspection activities and review safety plans on a regular basis as work progresses.
  • Attend various field location meetings including safety tail gate discussions, environmental trainings, and pre-activity meetings.
  • Write Environmental Inspector’s Daily Reports (EIDRs) and prepare project record and photographically document work activities and contract issues.
  • Coordinate with the Contractor’s Environmental Manager, Environmental Compliance Inspector, and BMP maintenance crews related to needed BMP repairs.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Enviromental studies or closely related.

In addition to:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to respectfully communicate, both orally and written, with diverse groups of individuals and audiences.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, provisions, and relevant mandatory standards.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain within active construction sites, and work safely around construction of asphalt, concrete, earthwork, structures, and other heavy equipment, next to highway traffic.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Knowledge of and experience with construction administration procedures for WSDOT projects.
  • Knowledge of WSDOT Construction Manual, Design Manual, and Environmental Manual
