Our Fish Hatchery Technician, 

  • Monitors fish behavior and health.
  • Monitors egg and fish production, disinfects and enumerates eggs.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Performs fish inventories, splits and weight samples and plants.
  • Receives direction for sorting adults for spawning activities.
  • Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment.
  • Assists in remote trapping and spawning operations, including transport of equipment and gametes.
  • Receives direction for air spawning at hatchery.
  • Assists with tracking temperature units (TU’s) and monitoring chillers to adjust TU’s, including tracking thermal marks.
  • Receives direction for calibration of formalin systems based on flows.
  • Incubates eggs using a variety of vessels including, shallow troughs.
  • Receives direction for monitoring dissolved oxygen levels to maintain proper carrying capacity of rearing units.
  • Assists in distribution of daily feed rations.
  • Recovers pond mortality daily.
  • Clips the fins of fish as part of a marking program.
  • Receives direction from Fish Hatchery Specialist for loading fish for transport using a variety of methods such as: brail and crane.
  • Enters data into forms and spreadsheets.
  • Receives direction on organization and maintenance of hatchery tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable conditions – including adverse weather.
    2. Work is performed alone and with others in remote locations, it includes performing strenuous physical activities, including lifting or moving feed sacks that weigh up to 55 lbs. daily.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, forty hours per week – work is non-scheduled.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Minimum travel is involved with this position.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Pickups, four-wheeler, chainsaw, table saw, various shop tools and any other tools required at the hatchery.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Will have interactions with the public when they visit the facility and will give guided tours when they are scheduled.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must hold a valid First Aid card (or obtained within six (6) months of hire).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Six (6) months of hatchery experience.
