The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Conservation Recreation and Transactions Division. Are you interested in a Community or Land Use Planning, Recreation, or Natural Resource Management field and want real-world, cutting edge, research and policy management experience? If so, you may be perfect for the DNR Recreation and Conservation internship program. This paid internship opportunity with DNR offers valuable networking possibilities and on-the-job experience. This position will work closely with DNR’s statewide Recreation Policy Manager on several recreation policy projects. This intern will:

  • Gain valuable experience working with a team of professionals in a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Understand emerging trends for contemporary recreation and natural resource issues.
  • Assist with quality research, stakeholder outreach, and project management activities.
  • Help plan and draft data analytics and reports.
  • Have a flexible start date with a minimum 3 months’ duration.

Responsibilities:

  • Helping assess and evaluate impacts e-bikes have on other recreation user experiences and DNR stakeholders.
  • Building a strong and positive rapport with not only visitors recreating on DNR managed lands, but with external partners such as Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, Washington Trails Association, Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, Northwest Motorcycle Association, Washington Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance and other partnering agencies.
  • Representing the agency in a positive manner when interacting with the public.
  • Collaboratively plan and prioritize field work, project milestones and deadlines.
  • Developing visitation survey tool and conducting visitation surveys of the public in research pilot locations.
  • Analyzing survey data and draft report findings that will be used to present to the Washington State Legislature by September 30, 2022.
  • May assist in drafting formal DNR policy regarding how, when, where, and what classifications of e-bikes may be used for recreation on DNR managed lands.
  • May assist in other projects as needed including grant application oversight, legislative budget requests, volunteer program systems tracking, and/or asset management.

Required Qualifications: 

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Community or Land Use Planning, Recreation, Public Administration, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or related field and will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester. OR a graduate student.
  • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
