Position Overview

The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for organizing and supporting a variety of community engagement activities to ensure meaningful and inclusive participation at California State Parks/Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. The ideal candidate is passionate about nurturing meaningful relationship with community members, developing partnerships, and brings community perspective to the conversations. If you enjoy being at the intersection of parks, history, culture and nature, this position might be just for you! 

Employment Terms

Part-time (average of 20 hours per week) 
Start Date: January 2022 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Represent Parks California and California State Parks in community and stakeholder meetings.  
  • In partnership with California State Parks, facilitate the development of communication strategies. 
  • Organize and participate in outreach events. 
  • Support park staff in organizing, promoting and implementing special programs. 
  • Generate and maintain community contact list.  

Partner and Community Working Groups 

  • Help prepare for meeting presentations and speakers. 
  • Organize workshop logistics including identifying meeting locations, securing refreshments, and coordinating necessary meeting materials and supplies. 
  • Create and promote upcoming meetings or workshops (i.e. phone calls and email communications). 
  • Facilitate or present at community meetings or workshops. 
  • Record community feedback and notes from meetings. 
  • Engage communities remotely as well as in-person.  

Program Coordination 

  • Plan and coordinate project activities and project deliverables in partnership with California State Parks, other project partners and interns.  
  • Assist with research and development of: 
    • Interpretive programs that demonstrate the best practices of interpretation and community engagement. 
    • Culturally relevant programs that engage target audiences and the public.  
    • Sustainability park partnership models. 

This position requires working ‘off‐hours’ including some weekend and evening meetings and events as well. Though the position is based out of our San Francisco office, the Community Engagement Coordinator will engage in field work at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area.  

Administration 

  • Coordinate logistics and events like camp programs, listening sessions and partner meetings 
  • Gather, document, and organize information related to project to track project progress 
  • Maintain budget and project expenses and related paperwork and documentation; and perform related duties as required

  • Public outreach and engagement: has experience and/or is comfortable meeting and interacting with new people and is interested in trying out new forms of outreach to achieve program goals 
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, motivate and support community residents to actively engage in change-making activities in their community.  
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and understanding of environmental justice issues in underinvested, urban communities. 
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments with little supervision. 
  • Teamwork: is willing to pitch in and contribute to achieving group goals and supports everyone’s efforts to succeed 
  • Well‐organized and detail-oriented. 
  • Communication skills: 
  • Excellent oral and written skills. 
  • Considers and respond appropriately to the needs and capabilities of different people in different situations; is tactful and treats others with respect; relates effectively to others when encountering difficult situations 
  • Speaks clearly and effectively, is thoughtful, persuasive; writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs 
  • Minimum two year of personal or work experience and knowledge of Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. 
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages besides English is a plus. 

Computer Skills

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, especially including Word, Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Proficient in the use of SharePoint, Google Docs and/or the willingness and ability to learn 

Physical Requirements and Work Environments 

  • Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting 
  • Work involves standing or walking 
  • Work requires some squatting and kneeling 
  • May lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
