Position Summary:

The Sustainability Manager is responsible for overseeing the Tribe’s Sustainability Initiative. The position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the Tribe’s environmental strategies. The position will coordinate with the Sustainability Working Group and other departments to assist with sustainability projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Responsible for implementation of the Tribe’s Sustainability Initiative. Develop and implement goals based on Resolution passed by Tribal Council.
  2. Develop and prepare planning and sustainability documents including working with the legal department and code writers to draft code amendments, regulations and procedures.
  3. Interpret local, state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines as they relate to assigned responsibilities.
  4. Perform research, prepare special studies, write reports, collect and analyze various statistical and/or technical data.
  5. Work closely with tribal facilities, and other departments to assist with projects and implementing sustainability goals and initiatives.
  6. Works with other local governments to partner on sustainability measures.
  7. Write grant work plans working with the Grants department to apply for available grants. Ensures grant objectives are met and reported timely.
  8. Lead the compilation and delivery of quarterly and annual Sustainability Reports. These are used both internally and externally.
  9. Works with all Tribal entities to introduce sustainability proposals and initiatives.
  10. Provides education and outreach to Tribal Community regarding sustainability initiatives.
  11. Explores future opportunities for Tribal investments in solar power, geo-thermal power, etc.
  12. Work with and provide regular updates to the Tribe’s Sustainability committee.
  13. Keeps up to date on regional sustainability trends and recent reports.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory duties.  This position serves as a resource to tribal facilities, departments, and the Sustainability Committee.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Sustainability or a related field and two years of related work experience in the field of sustainability or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in sustainability, environmental or other related field with experience managing and organizing people to implement organizational change is highly preferred.
  • Comprehensive research and analytical skills; ability to capture information quickly and to synthesize it into measurable information required.
  • Experience in Tribal sustainability work is also preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge in the use of word processing and spreadsheets (i.e. Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Access).

  • Current local, state, and federal energy policies, programs, and regulations.
  • General environmental and sustainability issues.
  • Methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report presentation.
  • Open space Conservation including agriculture and forestry lands.
  • Grant writing and administration, preferably in the sustainability field.
  • Contract processes and procedures.
  • Principles and practices of public administration, organization, personnel management and modern supervisory practices.

Contacts are both within and external to the Tribe and may be of a non-routine nature and involve complex, technical issues that relate to overall Tribal operations and services.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Work assignments are of a complex nature requiring strategic thinking and juggling multiple, changing or conflicting priorities.


Licenses or Certificates

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance.  Restrictions must not otherwise prevent the employee from driving a GSA vehicle.
  • Must submit to and be able to pass a criminal background check prior to employment and periodically throughout employment.
