As our Maintenance Mechanic, you’ll have the opportunity to take on a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair areas at our Lyons Ferry Hatchery, Tucannon Fish Hatchery, Cottonwood, Curl and Dayton Acclimation Facilities.

With that in mind, 

Picture yourself using your expertise in skilled fields of plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, and machinist work.

This is an opportunity to apply basic fish culture knowledge to fulfill standby obligations, and to make sound decisions regarding maintenance, fabrication, etc., relative to hatchery operations.

Duties

Our Maintenance Mechanic 2, 

  • Develops and maintains a small water system management program, which includes well-head protection, cross-contamination prevention, annual operating permit, emergency response plan, water conservation plans, and operation and maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains a domestic water system.
  • Maintains telemetry alarm systems – operates and maintains all alarm-monitored systems to include weekly checks as appropriate.
  • Operates and conducts weekly checks on production wells.
  • Conducts general maintenance on fire suppression, irrigation, and other wells, pumps, and associated systems. 
  • Installs/replaces small operational pumps and associated plumbing.
  • Maintains and repairs all water-delivery pipelines for domestic, fire suppression, irrigation, and production water systems, including PVC and iron lines.
  • Performs general maintenance on standby generators, to include oil changes, filter changes, belt replacement, coolant checks, battery replacement, etc.
  • Conducts weekly checks on generator associated diesel fuel storage tanks, and day tank systems.
  • Identifies and makes recommendations for long-term domestic water, alarm system, pump, well and plumbing, generator, and electrical system needs/improvements.
  • Operates and maintains an electrical distribution system.
  • Monitors all electrical systems including multiple motor-control systems and completes minor repairs as appropriate.
  • Builds equipment and tools using wood, PVC and other plastics, iron, aluminum, stainless steel, and other materials.
  • Maintains all vehicles, tools, equipment, including two forklifts, backhoe, two fish-planting trucks, tankers, various mowers and landscaping tools, pumps, motors, etc.
  • Maintains all buildings and grounds, which includes fish incubation buildings with shop rooms and feed storage rooms, walk-in freezers, a cool room, spawning buildings, storage building, and eight residences, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:    

  • Work is performed in variable weather conditions, temperatures, and high winds.
  • Infrequent travel might include icy roads, deer, and other wildlife. 

Schedule:   

  • Typically, work schedule is 40 hours per week, but occasionally extra hours may need to be worked for emergency situations or other workload needs.

Travel Requirements: 

  • Travel may be required to accomplish agency goals.

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Power and hand tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments.
  • Transport trucks, passenger vehicles, fish pumps, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software.

Customer Interactions:

  • Occasional interaction with the general public.

Other: 

  • Per Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14 state employees must be fully vaccinated effective October 18, 2021, absent an approved medical or religious accommodation.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduation AND four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, and repair work. 

Please Note: Specific experience in complex water delivery systems, alarm system uses and maintenance, large pumps/well/standby generator use and maintenance, complex electrical systems, domestic water systems and requirements, hatchery operations, fabrication and welding, and physical plant maintenance is highly preferred.

Job knowledge and experience with:

  • Water delivery systems including domestic water systems and requirements.
  • Welding, carpentry, machinist work for fabrication/repair.
  • Plumbing of all types for various improvements/repair of multiple water delivery systems.
  • Small engine repair; motor operation and repair.
  • Electrical system operation and repair, motor control repair.
  • Pump operation and repair.
  • Use and maintenance of a wide variety of tools and equipment for maintenance (welders, hand tools, power tools, pumps, etc.).
  • Use and maintenance of all vehicles used in hatchery operations (trucks, backhoe, forklift, gator and fish planting truck, etc.).
  • Safety procedures (confined space, lockout/tag out, tool and equipment use, etc.).
  • Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Basic fish culture.

Ability to:

  • Lead and assist in training employees.
  • Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A class B commercial driver’s license.
  • A pesticide applicators license.
  • A Water Distribution Manager One license.
  • A watercraft operator’s certificate.
