Serving with Glacier Peak Institute is a unique opportunity to work in outdoor education and recreation in a beautiful mountain community! Enveloped in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, Glacier Peak Institute (GPI) empowers youth, community, and ecosystems to prosper and cultivate a shared resilient future through action-based outdoor education. GPI provides STrEaMs based education to rural youth (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math experienced through recreation and art to gain skills) as well as having and operating a youth forestry crew.

AmeriCorps members should be passionate about empowering at-risk youth, and willing to serve both directly and behind the scenes. These positions are vital to our capacity as we are a very small non-profit serving in an under-resourced community. This service term is designed to provide valuable professional and personal experiences. Members may receive an educational stipend and GPI will assist in finding them local housing.

Member Duties: Program Support Coordinators will increase GPI’s capacity and program reach. Service members will be responsible for: develop and educate youth through outdoor school STEM, recreation, and stewardship opportunities; collaborate with partner organizations on creating programs and coordinate outings; expand partnership opportunities by continuously seeking ways to build cultural exchanges between urban, suburban, and rural youth; coordinate, recruit, organize, and inspire volunteers; improve and implement a system for youth outreach and communication to diversify participation in programming; lead recreation and program events; implement safety guidelines, protocols, and best practices for programming; empower youth to utilize Growth Mindset to inspire resilience and grit; and expand and replicate GPI programs to benefit other struggling rural communities and increasing the exposure urban and rural youth have to nature.
