The Outdoor Programs Manager will plan, coordinate and evaluate guided program; manage program registrations and registration systems (database), provide excellent customer service and participant communications and supervise and mentor seasonal guide staff. In addition, the Outdoor Programs Manager will function as a Lead Guide to safely facilitate educational and adventurous guided programs. Reporting to the Programs Director, the Outdoor Programs Manager will work collaboratively with staff, partners and volunteers, while promoting a positive and progressive work environment in alignment with the Institute’s mission, values, strategic plan and policies. Responsibilities:

Program Management (~50% of time)

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate logistics for all guided adventures (including Summit Climbs, Into the Crater hikes, Glacier Overlook Hikes, field seminars and winter adventures);
  • Manage and maintain registration database/CRM (Neon One) for all programmatic registrations and communications;
  • Regularly review and update risk management protocols and program curriculum;
  • Provide excellent communication with participants and volunteers before and after programs;
  • Plan and organize outdoor recreation events;
  • Manage program photos, waivers, trip reports and incident documentation, and track and report on outdoor programs;
  • Collaborate with Communications department on website, marketing and social media;
  • Coordinate and manage supplies and use of MSHI’s remote Field Camp (near Windy Ridge, NE of Mount St. Helens);
  • Manage and maintain all program supplies;
  • Evaluate current and identify new culturally relevant outdoor recreation opportunities for both changing markets and diverse audiences;
  • Maintain MSHI vehicles for programmatic use.

Leadership and Supervision (~30% of time)

  • Hire, supervise and mentor seasonal guide staff and field camp host (5-10 people total);
  • Develop training resources and provide training on program operations, risk management, interpretation and natural history, and group management for seasonal guide staff;
  • Working with the Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager and Programs Director, provide coordination of and training for program specific volunteers (Mountain Stewards);
  • Integrate organizational Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals into outdoor programs;
  • Work with Programs Director to develop and evaluate annual programmatic goals and assessments to ensure on-going progress towards the organization’s strategic plan;
  • Support marketing and donor communications;
  • Manage program budget with support from the Programs Director.

Program Implementation (~20% of time)

  • Facilitate safe and educational climbs, hikes and winter adventures to the rim, crater and other areas throughout the Gifford Pinchot National Forest as a lead guide:
    • Provide strong outdoor leadership for guide team including assistant guides and volunteer guides
    • Actively build team dynamics and encourage healthy decisions among guide team and participants during climbs/hikes
    • Respond to incidents, major or minor injury, and concerns in a thoughtful and safe manner
    • Provide quality and compassionate participant care on each trip
    • Mentor assistant guides as they develop their hard and soft skills
    • Coordinate and support assistant guides and volunteer guides (Mountain Stewards) during trips
    • Deliver educational lessons on basic mountaineering and hiking, natural history, and Mount St. Helens history
  • Represent the Mount St. Helens Institute at community events, workshops, conference and partnership meetings;
  • Assist with outdoor youth education programs as needed.

As a small non-profit, we all wear many hats. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in outdoor leadership, guiding or outdoor education;
  • Minimum one (1) year supervising, training and/or mentoring staff or volunteers;
  • Demonstrate personal and professional commitment to equity, inclusion and cultural competency;
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR or high certification;
  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated strong computer and software skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated experience guiding others in alpine environments;
  • Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR (or willingness to obtain);
  • Demonstrated experience providing care during an emergency;
  • Knowledge of Leave No Trace practices and environmental awareness
  • Working knowledge of natural history
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds, ages and cultures, navigate difficult conversations, think critically to resolve conflicts and build trust and confidence in others to achieve program’s goals;
  • Passion for the mission of MSHI;
  • A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
