What makes this role unique? 

In this position, you will supervise the Product Testing Unit in the Statewide Coordination Section of the Environment Assessment Program (EAP). EAP is the technical arm of the agency and conducts scientific studies to guide Ecology’s regulatory decisions.

  • You will lead a group of scientists conducting research into toxics in consumer products. This work intersects directly with regulators to reduce or remove these products from production.  
  • You will build a new unit and expand the program in product testing, which is only conducted in a few locations across the US. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a dynamic and complex environment with many unknowns.
  • The staff on this team came to Ecology because they are invested in the agency’s mission of protecting our land, air, and water for future generations.   

What you’ll do: 

  • Coordinate with the agency’s regulatory program for reducing toxic threats to understand priorities and establish scientific studies.
  • Supervise the scientists who conduct studies on toxics in consumer products.
  • Manage the product testing budget.
  • Serve as the main contact for program development for product testing.
  • Serve as a program liaison on inter-program and inter-agency work groups.
  • Coordinate with relevant governmental, professional, and industry officials.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational, volunteer and lived-experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry OR a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry. 
  • Six (6) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
  • One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional chemists (may be gained concurrently with the experience listed above).  

Option 2:

  • A Master’s degree in chemistry.
  • At least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry. 
  • Four (4) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
  • One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional chemists (may be gained concurrently with the experience listed above).

Option 3:

  • A PhD in chemistry.
  • At least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry. 
  • Three (3) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
  • One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional chemists (may be gained concurrently with the experience listed above).

Option 4:

  • One year of experience as a Chemist 3 at the Department of Ecology.
  • One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional chemists (may be gained concurrently with the experience listed above).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading scientific studies from project design and Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) development to report writing and presentation.
