We are recruiting to fill one or more positions at either the Environmental Engineer 2 or 3 level.  

Selected candidates will be hired into either class based on qualifications – this recruitment does not offer an in-training option

Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary will be as follows:

Environmental Engineer 2 – $5,229.00 – $6,862.00

Environmental Engineer 3 – $6,063.00 – $7,957.00  

Depending on qualifications, expectations of the position’s duties and level of supervision may vary.

Our Environmental Engineer 2’s and 3’s, 

  • Prepare preliminary engineering designs, cost estimates, feasibility studies, final engineering designs, plans and specifications.
  • Utilize technical design and analysis skills in structural, hydraulic, and environmental engineering.
  • Review and/or approve detailed engineering plans, specifications, site plans, engineering reports, and the operation/maintenance of environmental systems. 
  • Develop project scopes of work and monitor project schedules. 
  • Work with and manage construction crews. 
  • Prepare, review, and negotiate for environmental permits, regulatory orders, environmental plans, and monitoring program(s). 
  • Provide engineering expertise to the review and evaluation of proposals and existing environmental permits and permit applications. 
  • Provide administrative support for projects by collecting data, providing project documentation, and training staff. 
  • Mange Public Works (PW) and Architects/Engineers (A/E) Contracts.
  • Assist in budget implementation, forecasts, and administration.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Approximately 70% office work and 30% field work/travel. 
    2. Teleworking options may be available for office work. 
    3. Field work includes working in all weather conditions, on rough terrain, in riverbanks, and on slippery slopes. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules, especially during the construction season.
  • Travel Requirements:   
  1. 30% Travel/Field
  • Tools and Equipment:
  1. Computer hardware and software; multi-line telephones.
  • Customer Interactions: 
  1. Exemplary customer service is integral to department success.

Qualifications

To qualify at the Environmental Engineer 2 Level:  

  • A valid Engineer-in-Training certificate. 

To qualify at the Environmental Engineer 3 Level: 

  • A valid Washington State Professional Engineering License. 

Please Note: Requirements for registration as a professional engineer in the state of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college-level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams.  

Applicants qualifying through the licensing reciprocity option must achieve registration as a professional engineer in the state of Washington within six months of appointment to this class

The Environmental Engineer 2’s and 3’s must have: 

Knowledge of: 

  • Principles and practices of engineering.
  • Environmental sanitation.
  • Design, construction and operation of air quality control, water supply and treatment and sewage and industrial waste disposal systems.
  • Physical and biological sciences as related to engineering; methods and procedures in establishing and administering an engineering program; laws and regulations governing environmental issues.
  • Physical and biological sciences related to engineering. 
  • Laws and regulations governing environmental issues.

Ability to: 

  • Evaluate technical engineering data and computations.
  • Develop designs involving engineering theory and judgment.
  • Plan, promote and administer engineering projects. 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with public officials and community groups. 
  • Write engineering reports and proposed legislation.

AND 

  • A Driver’s License valid in the State of Washington, and an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • On the job training beyond education requirements in a diverse work setting for at least five (5) years.
  • Knowledge of fish hatchery operations, fish behavior, fish passage and screening regulations, Public Works contracting laws and regulations.
