Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 3, 

• Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices with crew and supervisor. 
• Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements. 
• Monitors fish health and behavior. 
• Actively seeks to learn new fish culture practices. 
• Calculates and administers chemical treatments as needed for fish health. 
• Reports fish culture activities in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
• Monitors egg and fish production. 
• Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples, and fish plants/releases. 
• Leads crew in feeding, cleaning, ponding, transferring, planting, and releasing fish. 
• Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (pumps, motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, and flashlights).
• Leads others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data required by the program, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

• Work Setting, including hazards: 
  1. Work is outdoors in variable conditions – including adverse weather and in remote locations.  
  2. Work includes performing strenuous physical activities and repetitive lifting at least 50 lbs.
• Schedule: 
  1. Typically, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.
  2. The work hours can vary greatly for this position at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.
  3. Stand-by may be required for this position.
• Travel Requirements: 

1. Travel may be required for short periods of time to accomplish agency goals and required training, or to attend meetings.

• Tools and Equipment: 

1. Power and hand tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments.
2. Small and large fish transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine powered equipment, computers, and software.

• Customer Interactions: 
• Communicating effectively with co-managers and constituents daily – occasional interactions with media outlets.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 Please Note: Four (4) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.

Job knowledge and experience with:

• Fish Culture techniques.
• Water dynamics, i.e., fish requirements for; DO levels, water chemistry, temperature, turbidity.
• Basic mathematics.
• Computer knowledge of Word, Excel, and other applications.
• Proper calibration and operation of measuring instruments.

Certifications/Licenses: 

• A valid driver’s license 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of hatchery forms; application and use of key forms; proper procedures, etc.
• Currently hold forklift certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
