Position Overview

This fulltime, year-round position will work with the Sustainability Programs department at Walking Mountains to fulfill the goals of Waste Diversion and Reduction for Eagle County through the Zero Waste events program. This position supports the community as a whole with sustainability best-practices and is responsible for the following duties.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesZero Waste Program

  • Assist with the continued development and coordination of waste diversion initiatives, including zero waste events
  • Serve as coordinator and site supervisor for all Zero Waste events; including staff and/or volunteer management, training and data collection
  • Provide event proposals and invoices for Zero Waste events and cultivate relationships with event organizers
  • Coordinate details related specifically to each Zero Waste event
  • Ensure that support staff and/or volunteers at all events are able to provide visitors, vendors and others with accurate information about waste diversion options in Eagle County and beyond through education and outreach
  • Manage venue waste collection, disposal operations, and communicate with waste hauler
  • Provide leadership and delegate tasks as needed to volunteers and staff at Zero Waste events
  • Reporting of waste totals and diversion numbers when possible
  • Recruit and train new zero waste staff for events
  • Act as a professional representative of Walking Mountains when interacting with the public, including zero waste services when interacting with town staff, event organizers, and vendors

Waste Diversion and Reduction Programs

  • Provide outreach and education throughout the Eagle Valley to ensure community awareness and participation in effective waste diversion and recycling practices and implement strategies to integrate more diverse socio-economic communities
  • Create innovative ways of adapting and improving education and outreach around waste diversion for residents, businesses, schools and governments
  • Participate in the Materials Management Task Force and help advance progress on the goals set forth in the Eagle County Climate Action Plan
  • Work with Sustainability Programs Manager to coordinate, plan, and recruit for the Zero Waste Ambassador program

Program Coordination and Administration

  • Provide regular updates to the Sustainability Programs Manager to communicate activities and results
  • Assist Sustainability Programs Manager in creation of annual specific program budget
  • Compile participation statistics by tracking attendees to events and volunteers

Instruction and Professional Development

  • Work with the Programs Manager to plan and implement schedule and professional development for interns
  • Act as a professional representative of Walking Mountains when providing instruction and trainings
  • Attend conferences, workshops and trainings relevant to waste diversion and sustainability

Personnel Management

  • Assist in recruitment, training, supervising and evaluating seasonal interns and volunteers involved with Zero Waste and facilitate opportunities for them to interact with Walking Mountains staff
  • Help supervise and mentor sustainability interns, enforcing responsibilities and expectations for the internship position when needed

Operations and Facilities

  • Assist with on-going facility operations and organizational special events as needed
  • Understand and follow the organizational risk management policies and procedures
  • Act in compliance with the Walking Mountains Science Center Employee Handbook
  • Oversee program resources related to Zero Waste

Communication/Marketing

  • Provide program descriptions and update content for Walking Mountains publications and website specific to waste diversion as needed
  • Coordinate program calendars with other Sustainability Programs and Walking Mountains staff for cross promotion and collaboration on programs and events with synergies
  • Work with Marketing staff, Sustainability Programs Manager, Fellow and interns (as needed) on creation of new educational collateral for the Zero Waste program and related initiatives
  • Represent Walking Mountains at conferences, programs and events

Qualifications

  • Experience with zero waste programs, sustainability initiatives, and recycling and waste diversion
  • Experience in coordinating staff and/or volunteers
  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Professional demeanor to represent Walking Mountains at Zero Waste and community events
  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability and stewardship projects for various ages
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to communicate with a variety of audiences
  • An independently-driven team player who is positive, flexible and friendly
  • Ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to locations in the Eagle Valley
  • Ability to carry heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Ability to work variable hours

Work Environment

The responsibility of a Sustainability Programs Associate takes place both indoors and outdoors. Primarily during the summer events season where hours and days worked may vary, a significant portion of time is spent outdoors managing Zero Waste events, as well as assisting with tours at the local recycling facility, and being active in schools and at various community events. This portion of the job includes a fair amount of travel and hauling of materials to different locations. The remaining time is spent indoors in an open office environment at the Borgen Precourt Center for Sustainability creating zero waste proposals and scheduling, maintaining prompt communication across various projects and responsibilities, and appropriate planning.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary scale of $32,000 – $40,000 dependent on experience. Benefits are competitive and include medical and dental insurance and a 401K retirement program. Also included are 12 paid holidays, 15 days paid vacation, and 12 sick days, professional development opportunities, pro deals, and discounted ski pass. Benefits are reviewed annually.
