Summary: The American Conservation Experience, a nationwide Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ and Salt Lake City, Utah in partnership with the BLM’s National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is seeking Two Curation Team Members to dedicate 26 weeks to assist the BLM Interpretive Center staff with curation work to prepare for the temporary closure of the museum in spring 2022, in ensuring the inventorying and assessment of the permanent collection is completed before construction is scheduled to begin.

The ACE Members will gain valuable skills, behind the scenes work in a museum, learn curation and associated skills to add to the depth of your resume, and learn how jobs with the U.S. Government are in related fields of study, and communication. They will also benefit from mentoring their peers and sharing their experiences with the wider community.

The ACE Members work contributes to the understanding of the Interpretive Center’s mission, and influences visitors’ opinions, attitudes, and enjoyment of the site. The ACE Members will have a direct effect on individual and group safety, education, and appreciation of resources and the BLM mission.

Location: Baker City, Oregon

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is located 5 miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. The site is administered through the Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office.

Project Website:

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center offers living history demonstrations, interpretive programs, exhibits, multimedia presentations, special events, and more than four miles of interpretive trails, using life-size displays, films and live theater presentations, this Center tells the story of Oregon Trail pioneers, explorers, miners and settlers of the frontier west. The 500-acre site includes remnants of the historic Flagstaff Gold Mine, actual ruts carved by pioneer wagons, and magnificent vistas of the historic trail route. Baker City, OR, population approximately 10,000, is located in scenic Northeast Oregon, just two hours west of Boise, ID. Surrounded by the Wallowa Mountains, Hells Canyon, and the Elkhorn Mountains, Baker offers exciting year-round outdoor adventures. The vibrant historic downtown is now home to countless restaurants, galleries, and local independent retail shops.

Living Allowance:

The member should anticipate serving 40 hrs/wk and will receive a living allowance of $600 /wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly. A Relocation Allowance of $450 is available.

Housing:

Not included, the member responsible to find their own housing However, a Housing Allowance is included at $300/month. There are reasonably priced AirB apartments in the area.

Training:

The BLM Curation staff will provide basic orientation and training, which includes hands-on mentoring, online webinars, and on-the-job shadowing. Training will include but not limited to; Condition assessments, diorama inventorying, photography, and various other topics to assist in this important position. The BLM will provide training and guidance in career and job skill building. Their experiences will ultimately lead to improved opportunities for future employment and encourage the ACE Member to continue exploring a career with BLM or other land management agencies and organizations.

Public Land Corps Special Hiring Authority:

ACE Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a special hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Qualifying ACE Members who serve a “minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation projects as defined in the Public Lands Corps Act of 1993 and at least 120 hours were served on a project utilizing the Public Lands Corps legal authority.” Eligible ACE Members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.

Project Background and Objectives:

The Work is generally standing, walking, sitting, with mild lifting (not more than 25 lbs) on an occasional basis.The ACE Member will spend most of the workday indoors, in an accessible building. The ACE member may operate standard office equipment, to include computers, copiers, and phones.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performing technical duties in connection with the management of the museum collection.
  • Completing baseline assessment of objects in the permanent museum collection, including taxidermy and mid-19th century artifacts.
  • Moving and cataloging artifacts and exhibits.
  • Protecting museum artifacts and interpretive panels in place.
  • Inputting information into the US Dept. of Interior, Collection Management System (CMIS) system.
  • Performing all established procedures necessary to the conservation of the collection.

Qualifications:

ACE Requirements:

  • Members must be US Citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Members must be 18-30 (Applicants between 31 and 35 may be considered based on veteran status)
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record with ability to provide required documentation; (Driving record checks will be completed during on-boarding process. (Members must be 21+ to drive ACE/Agency vehicles)
    • Ability to drive an [Agency or ACE] vehicle is required for this position. ACE will conduct a driving record check upon on-boarding and members must be cleared by ACE to drive.
