Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with Gulf Islands National Seashore are seeking a Youth Ambassador and Civic Leadership intern who will enhance the visitor experience, resource stewardship, and safety through interpretation and education, guest services, and digital communications. Gulf Islands National Seashore ranks as one of the most visited national parks in the United States. The park constantly seeks to enhance a person’s experience in person and virtually by sharing relevant, diverse, and inclusive stories. Work completed by the intern will contribute to and improve upon several ongoing projects that directly impact the visitor experience. The intern will also collaborate with external partners to create future park stewards.

The National Park Service (NPS) is part of the United States government’s Interior Department. The NPS mission is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Today the NPS manages over 420 national parks and monuments located across the United States. One of those parks is Gulf Islands National Seashore, the nation’s largest national seashore. Gulf Islands stretches along the northern Gulf Coast in Florida and Mississippi. The seashore preserves coastal defense fortifications, barrier islands, wilderness, and coastal ecosystems.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitate opportunities for people to explore the significance and meanings of historical sites.
  • Provide immersive interpretive and educational experiences through living history programming.
  • Conduct water based interpretive programs on park kayaks and skiff boats.
  • Facilitate on and off-site outreach programming/events.
  • Research, write, and create digital interpretive and educational content for virtual audiences to the park website and social media platforms.
  • Capture videos/photos of park resources.
  • Plan and support video or live-streaming efforts highlighting under-told park stories, people and places.
  • Administrative duties such as the opening and closing of buildings, answering of phones, filing, copying, and staffing an on site information desk will account for less than 10% of this positions work day.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum Age of 18
  • S. Citizen or Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Make a full 46-week commitment
  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The job will require outside exposure to heat and other environmental elements, driving, walking/hiking long distances, lifting 25+ pounds, customer service skills, and computer skills.
  • Field of study in history, archaeology, or anthropology.
