Duties

Leads the AIS Prevention Program Decontamination team.

         Tasks include:

  • Assisting senior biologists in the development and implementation of a decontamination program by researching, analyzing, and interpreting other decontamination program standards.
  • Determining decontamination training and certification standards of course curriculum.
  • Providing decontamination training and certification of all WDFW field staff, local governments, state and federal agencies, and private individuals or organizations.
  • Supervises Scientific Technician 2’s in the application and implementation of the decontamination program.
  • Operates and tows trailered hot-water pressure washer for training and field decontamination applications.

Prepares and reviews documentation and data.

         Tasks include:

  • Reviewing documentation such as, but not limited to, training standards, standard operating procedures (SOP) and policy documents pertaining to AIS and decontamination. 
  • Assisting in the review and development of AIS and decontamination mitigation plans of, but not limited to, Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA).
  • Making initial determinations or recommendations regarding conditions of permits, pertaining to AIS and decontamination.
  • Working with senior biologists to assist in preparing management and researching reports or proposals; determining techniques and procedures to address AIS by reviewing publications, documentation, and data.

Assists other AIS groups.

         Tasks include:

  • Assisting European green crab, zebra and quagga mussels, rapid response, and other AIS Unit projects.

Supervision and Mentoring.

         Tasks include:

  • Supervising and mentoring staff in order to support an effective motivated team.
  • Setting goals and objectives, developing strategies to implement, and developing performance measurements and standards for the purpose of ensuring individual and program performance objectives are met.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Work is performed approximately 72% field and 28% office.
    2. Conducting trainings is physically demanding carrying up to a 75-pounds and crawling all over watercraft throughout the state. Usually working independently, sometimes remote locations (following strict call in and out procedures), during inclement weather, day, and night.
  • Schedule:   
    1. 8hrs/day, Monday – Friday, 40hrs/week, but may occasionally be required to exceed these hours or work outside of normal schedule during holidays and weekends (may be required to respond on short notice to rapid response AIS emergencies).
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Frequent statewide travel and overnight stays up to five days at times.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Desktops, laptops, smart phones, electronic tablets, and electronic software forms, and field gear (i.e. xtratuffs, raingear, PFDs, earmuffs, hot water safety clothing, etc.).
    2. Complex mobile water quality laboratory, eDNA, and non-electronic biological and environmental sampling devices. 
    3. Safely transport and operate large equipment up to a 25-foot cargo trailer, watercraft, flatbed trailer, winches, motor vehicles, and complex hot water trailered pressure washers.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with the public on a regular basis conducting outreach and educational events, presentations, and monitoring. 
    2. Occasionally is confronted with citizens that are non-compliant or not cooperative.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences

     AND 

  • Three (3) years of experience in natural resources-related field with at least one (1) year in an AIS field.

Note: Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for experience including a Master’s degree in one of the above fields can substitute for two (2) years of experience other than AIS; OR PhD in one of the above fields can substitute for two (2) years of experience other than AIS and one (1) year of experience in AIS.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Job knowledge:

  • Identifying aquatic invasive species of concern for the state of Washington.
  • Familiarity with aquatic invasive species management principles and procedures.
  • Familiarity with and able to develop, implement, and manage statewide biological studies and management actions.
  • Preparing comprehensive written reports.
  • Using database construction, management, and routine analysis functions.
  • Operating and towing a trailered hot-water pressure washer independently throughout the state.
  • Must have experience with small engines.
  • Managing a heavy workload.

  • Take on opportunities for personal and professional growth and development.
