Duties

Responsibilities:
The Restoration Manager’s responsibilities include the following:

  • Managing a restoration program, including planning, developing, budget management, and guiding implementation of restoration projects to meet district, division, and agency objectives.
  • Negotiating and preparing land-use authroizations related to restoration projects on state-owned aquatic lands, while ensuring public safety and sound ecological principles.
  • Ensuring compliance with contract terms and performing site inspections.
  • Collaborating and supporting the work of the larger Rivers District team.
  • Collaborating with other Aquatics Restoration Managers and Scientists, external restoration practitioners, including Tribal, state, NGO, and federal partners.
  • Providing timely communication to other DNR staff and external partners and conducting education and outreach to the public.
  • Helping to support other district and division activities including habitat stewardship and environmental review of proposed projects affecting state-owned aquatic lands.
  • Developing a collaborative near- and long-term plan for habitat restoration and debris removal in Rivers District.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in environmental science, natural resource management, forestry, fisheries, wildlife science, marine science, environmental engineering, land use or environmental planning, or other relevant field.
  • Project and program management experience with on-the-ground restoration/removal work. This experience will typically involve ecological restoration or environmental engineering activities.
  • Experience with contracts such as master contracts, public works contracts, cooperative agreements, and/or use authorizations.
  • Experience interpreting and implementing guidelines, regulations, and laws associated with natural resource management, environmental protection, and/or cultural resource protection.
  • Experience managing multiple complex tasks, setting workload priorities, and completing tasks on time.
  • Demonstrate sustained commitment to teamwork, and collaborate in internal and external issues in an active, respectful, cooperative, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate ability to speak and write clearly and succinctly, and use typical office software.
  • The work environment is split roughly evenly between the office and the field. Most fieldwork involves being on, over, or adjacent to water. Many projects involve working over uneven terrain and steep slopes for long hours and in a variety of weather conditions. Projects also involve working around heavy equipment, vessels, and helicopters. Some fieldwork involves travel by small motorboat, either as crew or captain.
  • Travel is required on a regular basis throughout the district. Driving is required and is often long distances. Overnight travel is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:

  • A Master’s Degree in environmental science, natural resource management, forestry, geography, marine science, other science, engineering, land use or environmental planning, public policy, or other relevant field.
  • Knowledge of riverine, estuarine, and marine nearshore ecosystem processes and habitats.
  • Experience operating small motorboats.
  • Experience with troubleshooting, maintaining, and operating equipment such as power tools, remotely operated vehicles, cars, trucks, and vessels.
  • Experience working for or with other environmental protection or natural resource agencies.
  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS.
  • Ability to conduct public presentations.
  • Experience applying for and managing grants for natural resource/environmental protection, recreation, or historical preservation projects.
