Duties

Fish Culture

          Tasks Include: 

  • Projecting and monitoring fish growth and feed requirements.
  • Monitoring fish behavior/health, egg and fish production, and calculating medication levels prescribed to treat fish illness.
  • Performing fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Supervising the disposition of non-viable and surplus eggs, organizing the transfer of eggs, and directing the distribution of carcasses to contract vendors or agency approved entities.
  • Determining which mature male and female Natural Origin Brood (Salmon, Steelhead) are needed to spawn to ensure that minimum integration rates are achieved into the hatchery populations.
  • Cryogenically freezing Steelhead sperm to insure a minimum integration of Natural Origin Brood (Wild Steelhead) into future spawning populations.

Crew Leader

          Tasks Include:

  • Monitoring projects/activities to ensure completion in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring that employees are trained in and in compliance of LMS safety issues.
  • Agency liaison and project manager of the contracted crews during fish marking programs.
  • Acting as a supervisor coordinating workers during complicated adult spawning and surplus activities.
  • Working with Federal, State, Tribal, and Co-op’s in the planning of fish transfer and releases.

Physical Operation and Maintenance of Facility

           Tasks Include: 

  • Ensuring that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (i.e. pumps & motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, flashlights)
  • Ensuring timely repairs to facility and infrastructure often requiring the ability to metal weld, cut and drill.
  • Maintaining the grounds in appearance and upkeep during seasonal events, requiring the ability to operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, pressure washers, forklifts, generators, and carpentry power tools.
  • Coordinating and implementing annual set up and tear down of remote acclimation sites.
  • Assisting in the design or redesign of hatchery facilities.

Communication

          Tasks Include:

  • Keeping supervisor and management well-informed on production issues that may lead to fish health concerns or program shortfalls.
  • Communicating with outside entities as the facility subject matter expert to implement agency-approved projects.
  • Public communications, contact and outreach (visitors, scheduled educational tours, local festivals, volunteers and local school presentations).
  • Communicating with Fish Health Pathologists and Epidemiologists to ensure appropriate fish culture activities.

Data Collection, Entry, Reporting, and Budgeting

          Tasks Include:

  • Ensuring that staff are well informed on where and how to collect and record data.
  • Overseeing others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data.
  • Monitoring Fast track reporting to ensure accurate spending within the master index.
  • Reporting and submitting annual hazardous chemical inventory to the DOE, county, and emergency responders.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is typically outside for about 250 days a year in all weather conditions.
    2. Based on the remoteness of the facility, work will be alone about half the time.
    3. At times there, work may require repetitively lifting at least 50 lbs.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
    3. Standby duties are currently assigned – standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift is complete. While on standby this position will work ten days on and be off four days.
  • Standby:  
    1. All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
    2. Management may determine it is necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.
  • Housing: 
    1. Housing is not provided for this position.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Travel may be required in order to accomplish agency goals.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Power and hand tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments, transport trucks, and passenger vehicles.
    2. Adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engines, computers, and software.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Communicate effectively/respectfully with the public and volunteers – interact with small community groups and individuals on a regular basis.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • One year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.

OR

  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field AND two years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field.

          OR

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND two years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Four (4) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License required or ability to obtain one within 1 year.
  • Standby is required with a response time of 20 minutes.
  • Forklift certification required within 6 months of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two or four year degree in Fisheries or a closely associated field.
