Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental studies, sustainability studies or a similar discipline.
  • Master of Science degree, or ability to obtain one within two years, in a sustainable studies field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in the field of sustainability for a public university or municipality.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge in:

  • Basic sustainability concepts including but not limited to environmental management, climate change, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability procedures.
  • Basic understanding of the AASHE Stars rating system.
  • Experience with or knowledge of computer hardware and the Windows / Microsoft Office platform.

Skills in:

  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Writing – Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Ability to:

  • Communicate with campus community members – Provide information to campus faculty, students, and staff by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Acquire Information – Observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources.
  • Develop Objectives and Strategies – Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.
  • Establish and Maintain Interpersonal Relationships – Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
  • Analyze Data or Information – Identify the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.

Job Description

Texas State’s Sustainability Coordinator works collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, and students to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives to reduce the University’s impact on the environment. The Sustainability Coordinator will act as a guide and as a pipeline network to help bring departments together to produce the most effective plan of action to create the most sustainable atmosphere for Texas State University. Responsibilities include educating the University community about sustainability and coordinating campus programming and activities related to the environment and sustainability.

Job Duties

  • Work with both the residential and academic community of Texas State University by promoting the importance of being an environmental steward as well as promoting sustainable living methods.
  • Serve as a liaison between various campus entities as well as the City of San Marcos and other universities across Texas.
  • Coordinates and collects research data from the University for the ongoing Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) self-assessment program.
  • Be an active member in environmental and sustainable committees on campus. Representation is required but not limited to, Environmental and Sustainability Committee and the Environmental Service Committee, etc.
  • Assists in defining sustainability goals and tracks performance metrics to assess program effectiveness.
  • Supports Facilities and their team as appropriate in relation to implementing energy conservation and sustainability programs.
  • Researches and identifies grant-writing and other funding opportunities in support of expanded campus sustainability efforts.
  • Maintain a good relationship with office interns. Provide a space for academic growth along with personal/professional growth to ensure confidence when entering the world of sustainability.

Normal Work Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Normal Work Hours Start: 8:00AM

Normal Work Hours End: 5:00PM
